Can't believe some of the comments I'm reading here, some of you need to grow up. Ming-Chi Kuo has an excellent track record as an Apple observer and I agree with him - Force Touch, faster processor and more RAM likely won't be driving huge numbers of upgrades but Apple will still do nicely. And that's fine, all this stuff comes in cycles and Apple will amaze us with the iPhone 7. I see the "S" versions of iPhones as giving Apple the time to develop the next great non-"S" version iPhone.

Excellent? He's one of the idiots who derided Apple for not reaching the his forecast of 53M iPhones that he plucked out from thin air, pushing their share price through the floor.

its crazy that he thinks, having the latest feature is the only reason people want to upgrade. if this was true samsungs high end phones would be dominating iphone every time. people like me and my family of 13 (brothers, sisters, kids etc) all have iphones and when its time for a new phone we buy what ever iphone is new at the time, we are not attempted away by android as we are smart enough to know android is basically the same thing but less reliable, worse apps and malware. the moral of the story we will be buying the next iphone no matter what features it has or hasnt.

Hogwash.  There is still plenty of pent up demand, including myself (upgrading from 4s).  My wallet is just waiting for September to get here.  Force-touch is icing on the cake.

Few iPhone 6 users are going to upgrade to a 6s.  This is true every year, nothing new about that.  But the 6s does have enough new features (not to mention a new CPU, etc.) to get any remaining v3.x & 4.x users (like me) to finally upgrade, as well as a good portion of v5.x users.

    tf? What's this dude on?

Because Force Touch is the most bad a*** iPhone(still a rumor) feature I've heard of since FaceTime.

This guy is spewing this crap BEFORE the damn conference you better believe they will show off this feature in unimaginable ways (if announced) and you can bet we know nothing until September.

This guy acts like he came from the future and knows all features/plans Apple has.

Other upgeade every year. The thing is, the current 6/6+ line-up are so good I think maybe less people will upgrade from 6/6+ this year than previously. Then again, nah why wait if you don't have to image

Still loads of iPhone4S/5/5S users to upgrade though image

All correct.    This canard that Apple can only be successful if everyone upgrades every year is completely absurd.    Personally (not that what any one person does means anything), I have upgraded every 2-3 years.    Do we drive down auto-maker stocks because people don't buy a new car every year?

I think sales have the potential to decline, but not so much because there's not enough new functionality in the phone, but because Verizon (and others will probably follow) are no longer going to offer subsidized phones, if I'm interpreting recent announcements properly.   On the other hand, there's still plenty of people who don't have an iPhone and countries where there isn't huge penetration yet and Apple is just going to do just fine.    And if Android keeps having the security problems it's been having recently, seems to me that will drive more people to an iPhone.

And if Apple did come up with some "killer app" that only worked in a new model, then they'd downgrade projections because it only works in the new model.

Who's to say it's not possible to have both? Apple seems to be upgrading everything to both. Wouldn't be surprised if an Apple TV remote has both features.

Why would apple release a fancy remote and not push iPhones or iPod touches as the BEST WAY to control apple TV?

Expect the current aluminum remote to continue.

I think all analysts should be forced to "detail" what a thing is before they make their comment on whether or not sales or lack there of will affect or contribute to apple's demise.

I want this analyst to break down the exact function and give a detailed description of how it will be used and on which apps - then he can comment how that will cause apple to sell less. Anyone who has even the smallest bit of imagination can see the benefits across the board in a wide spectrum of things including games, etc

We don't know whether there's a killer app or not right now. Why are we talking like we've seen the keynote already? If Force Touch is announced I bet it will blow people away. People said iPhone sales wouldn't be great because no one cared about TouchID, Facetime and a keyboard-less touchscreen.

It's like they've either fixed what bothered me about the new designs (speed in the 3GS, better antenna design and camera in the 4S) or added stuff that made me go "woah" (Touch ID, gold case, and the massive camera improvements in the 5s).

Absolutely. Force Touch will be the TouchID of this generation. People without the feature will feel "left out".

Why can't it be aluminum? Isn't the new Macbook with both features aluminum?

But You're right, if the remote is too nice it can canibalize iPhone sales.

It is racist. Which part of his name is Ching or Chong?

After hearing that throughout my youth, I built up a little tolerance for ignorant fools.

Honestly could not differentiate lp and ft in normal use on the watch. I think I have a tendency to press hard when doing a long press so the two didn;t feel any different. They maybe should add a tiny amount of haptic feedback when a successful porce touch is registered.

Apple has some terrific software to rejecting unintended touch input. For example, I used PowerMacs for years and got used to pressing the button, which was below the trackpad. Apple later made the whole trackpad a physical button, but the muscle memory persisted, and I treat the lower third of the trackpad as if it was the old button. Now this isn't impressive until I realized that I tended to rest my thumb on the "button" (lower third of the trackpad) while moving the pointer with my forefinger above. The trackpad did not mistaken it for a multitouch gesture like pinch or zoom. In fact, it ignored my thumb altogether but if I tap (not push) the lower third of the trackpad, it treats it like a single click. Smart.

I present this anecdote as an example of some thoughtfulness and intelligence built in to Apple's UI that people don't always notice because it's so subtle. I'm sure Force Touch/long press will be handled with the same level of care and consideration.

I think the new carrier plans such as the ones announced by Verizon could have a negative impact on iPhone sales in the US as people may not upgrade every two years like they did before. Most previous plans did not offer any discount after the contract subsidy was complete so people thought it was worth it to pay another $200 and get back on a contract with a brand new phone and sell their old one. Now that the wireless/data and phone prices are separated, they may feel like they are not being as ripped off and might keep their phones longer than two years.

I have experienced Force Touch on Watch, and it doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but I'm not a big iPhone app user. I use mostly single purpose apps that are not so complex as to need a contextual menu.

He's desperate for people to ignore that iPhone sales error he pooped out for last quarter. Wasn't he looking for 53 million there at the end? Missing by ten percent should sting I imagine...

Indeed: those are the members of that maybe 73% who DIDN'T upgrade the last cycle that Cook mentions

I'm not sure the article was all that clear. Not sure if he is talking about iPhone 6 users or Apple users in general. I also believe in the US now that three out of the four major carriers will no longer offer two year contracts the update cycle for the consumer will change. Many just upgrade because their contract allow them to upgrade after two years.

Even on this forum we have users with iPhone 4,4s because the iPhone and iPad are more than fast enough to run just about any application anyone wants to run without any lag. People argue that 1gb of ram is more than enough now somehow a faster processor and more ram is going to be a selling point? That's unlikely.

The death of two year contracts is going to create longer upgrade cycles. The upgrade cycle has changed for the iPad simply because it's more than fast enough for the majority of users, it's logical the same is going to happen with the iPhone.
