After the Macintosh

The Mac brought the GUI to the consumer, what can Apple do to top that?

How about a computer with voice control built in that can power on with a word, and use voice commands to select menu items or use phrases to perform commands. Have a limited AI built in to recognize words. technology for this may exist already but hasn't be used in this way.

That's nowhere near the importance of the GUI. I want an Airport card implanted in me so I have access to everything on my computer, even the web. I'd just see the interface in my mind. I don't think the technology is quite there yet tough.

Heavens to Betsy! Somehow I think Microsoft would be more likely to come out with this. It would be Ballmer's little pet project.

Years ago Apple came up with a prototype interface called the Knowledge Navigator. Here is a clip:

    <a href="http://www.billzarchy.com/clips/clips_apple_nav.htm"; target="_blank">Navigator</a>

There is a longer version somewhere.

It features an avatar with whom you interact verbally who serves as a kind of servant/social secretary. Pretty cool vision.

By the way, if you find the long version note that it is huge (about 32MB) given the quality and size of the video. Shows you the improvement in QT over the years.

Pfff. I don't need that! I always work with 4 naked girls around me. That's why I want the Airport thing, I have no members left to use the mouse and keyboard!

You must have one of those Virtual Reality Helmets then <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

you mean you missed <a href="http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,53300,00.html"; target="_blank">this article</a> on wired yesterday?

sounds exactly what you pRon lovers are looking for ... although it sounds like win32 only for the moment ...

having tried using speakable items in the past, i found it almost ludricously bad. Mebbe it just didnt understand a Nor'n Irish accent though .. I had to try and talk like a preppy west coast guy for most shortcuts to be recognised

its a nice idea and i know voice control would be nice for OS X (getting quickly to all those open apps for example) but the technology seems to have stood still since 8.6 or 9 ... and even the text-to-speech facility is an old favourite since ... 7.5 at least ...

Agnes and Bruce feel like slightly retarded, long-distant friends anytime i hear them. I remember my mate creating loads of new voices on a quadra waaaay back just by mucking around with ResEdit. It'd be nice to at least have better speech sythesis on OS X.

Take the computer away from the computer. You'll have your laptop, desktop, workstation, etc. Your iPod will have all your storage and FireWire2 so that it basically becomes your data storage device - mp3s, word files, applications, movies, etc.

Software will integrate with this device to make it easy to manage it as the central repository of information.

Meanwhile, I still want to see a personal information server, which you can access remotely using any web browser, share files, calendaring, etc. Kind of a peer-to-peer agent/manager of information, where you have the control instead of a Microsoft passport/.Net centralized control thingie. I think Apple is the company to do this for us.

So we have all our big personal files, apps, on our portable music player/pod, and all our network files, shared info, etc, on a home workstation/server on a broadband connection.

Your "computer" become where you happen to be plugged in at the moment. All your games, apps, projects, etc, are always accessible to you.

A little history lesson for all the MAC Addicts out there. The original

creator of the GUI was Xerox. It just so happens that Jobs took (caugh-stole) that revolutionary new software and used it for his own

purposes, along with gates( but who cares about Gates). But yes Apple

did have a hand in mass-populationg the world with eye-candy, but

let us not forget the creators.

Maybe thats the whole point of the statement.

    Maybe Apple is waiting for someone to create something that is revolutionary, so they can steal it too. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Firewireless would have been that kind of advancement.

I prefer Ethernet in the Ether, but Firewireless would be good too.

practically speaking, all the effort in making these cool add-ons could be used to improve the current interface

My friend had a PowerMac (Maybe a 7100 or that era) and I showed him how to use speakable items and applescript. A few weeks later, he showed me how he had put it to use. He simply said "Computer, download porn" and sure enough, the computer would connect to the internet, log onto usenet with NewsWatcher, and download all the binaries from the naughty groups into a set folder on his desktop! See, Applescript and Speakable items really do work!

It should be simple then for Apple to do this with modern Macs. So why haven't they?

The next big thing in computing is going to be virtual reality body suits, and they will resemble space suits in their bulk in complexity. Why would we need such monstrosities? For GAMES, silly!

Imagine the latest iteration of Id's first person shooter, and now imagine being entirely immerssed in the game via wearing a full virtual reality body suit.

Now, consider the REAL reason such virtual reality body suits would sell so well! PORN! Imagine the possibilities! If Intel can make a CPU that cycles at 2..4 GHz, then I think their efforst at a true virtual reality adult body suit would leave us all in awe.

    dmgeist & MrBillData,

    are you both morons?

    Just curious.

YES, some of the staff at Xerox played around with the idea in their spare time. They developed a prototype as part of their development, but shit-canned the project as it was deemed "a toy".

Whereas our friend Mr. Jobs saw it, loved it, and nurtured it. He BOUGHT whatever rights were needed, modified it closer to his liking and LISA was born.

Without Apple and Steve Jobs, we would have probably been still typing away in MS-DOS till someone "rediscovered" the idea of the GUI.

Please do us a favour (and yourselves) and have a good read up on it. Most articles and books that cover this in-depth are very interesting and a great read. Even the part on how the Devil (Gates) weaseled his way in to have a "look" at Steves new toy, promising not to copy it.

You know, that makes me think (a miracle!). Maybe Gates and his cronies watch the AI forums for ideas to top Apple. Agh, I hope not. We'd be seeing Microsoft PornTablets all over the electronics stores. That'd put Apple out of business for good.
