I don't believe Apple wants to get into the content business - and most of the consternations about them entering the business I believe are focused on just shaking things around for negotiations. It does not mean they would not, just highly unlikely. What is best for Apple is to democratise the content creation business where smaller operations can create professional shows and sell directly to the individual. If they want to showcase shows, they might consider setting up tv stations like they did with Beats 1. It is the existing entrenched interests that don't want to allow a wider / more democratized content.... where you end up with more competitors creating content. I could see them setting up a VC of sorts to seed money to these content creators, if that is what it takes to break the backs of those that are resisting change. But creating it themselves - I don't think so.

It may only be Apple stirring the pot.... planned leaks for a specific purpose with regards to negotiations. Apple is very good at keeping secrets, and generally the only leaks come out of 3rd party manufacturing in China.... which means a leak like this would almost certainly have been on purpose.
I wonder if this means Samsung and LG will get into making movies and TV series for their own channels?

More and more market frangmentation. So the poor suckers (us) end up having to fork out more and more each month to get all the Progams we want to watch.

I know that I won't sign up to NetFlix, Amazon Prime etc. This includes any Apple only channel. Why? I'm close to retiring and my income will naturally drop. $9.99/month for this, $9.99/month for that and it all soon adds up to a lot of money. My neighbour dropped her cable subscription recently and saved close on $120/month. Over the course of a year it all adds up.

Can I be made to change my mind?

If someone was to offer a service without any advertising then I might sign up. The current number of adverts on US TV make it unwatchable in real-time.

Edit to add the below

Now with the news that NetFlix is droppong thousands of titles we risk even more market fragmentation. Epix probably wante more money than Netflix was willing to pay or Epix are going to start their own streaming service in the near future. YASVSS, Yet another Stupid Video Streaming Service. How many can the market take? IMHO there are already far too many.

    "Neighbour"? "Advert"? You're no American.

That is true but I spend 2-3 months a year in the US on Business. I also lived in N.H. for two years in the 1980's.

I've given up on trying to watch US TV in Hotels. I now copy the shows I have recorded at home (on my Humax PVR) onto my MBP to watch instead.
