iTunes Connect makes reference to 'tvOS,' new name for Apple TV interface

Code strings discovered in iTunes Connect on Wednesday morning make reference to an operating system known as "tvOS," apparently confirming a name change for the Apple TV's software interface.

The strings are embedded in references to Game Center, Apple's backend for Mac and iOS gaming, according to Twitter posts by developer Steve Troughton-Smith. One of them has a note attached, asking developers to "Submit via tvOS binary if you want this leaderboard to appear in Apple TV."

Aside from supporting claims of a overhauled interface, the code also backs reports that the Apple TV will get its own App Store, including access to games.

Second- and third-generation Apple TVs run on hardware similar to iPhones and iPads, but until now they have lacked the storage and interface for apps beyond basic audio and video playback. Indeed, its apps have been small enough for Apple to silently push them to users.

The company is expected to reveal a fourth-generation Apple TV at a press event later today, beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific. Other device features should include Siri support, and a new touch-based controller, enabling some of the complex interactions games demand.

AppleInsider will be providing live coverage of Apple's announcements from within the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

    Pronounced Teevoss, I guess?

How long before Apple supplants Siri with GLaDOS?

Don't forget macOS, or macBook, or timCook. Because naming conventions are the best thing to do and never get tired.

    Yes!

MacOS, iDeviceOS, WatchOS ... and, now tvOS ...

They're all the same -- and they're all different!

I suspect that tvOS will be closer to MacOS in openness than to iOS -- Apple can relax the rules because the AppleTV (for some uses) need not be as secure/available as an iPhone.

Similarly, Apple can pick (mix and match) UI features from MacOS and iDeviceOS that deliver the best UX for games, media consumption, home monitoring/control, creation, collaboration, etc.

This ain't your Fathers OS ...

And Microsoft is pushing Windows 10 into Xbox. Because they are the lone holdout against Unix.

I’m worried that it will make anyone with an Apple TV into a “Nielsen family”. I don’t want them to know what I watch.

In calling Windows 10 the “last version of Windows”, as they have, anyone think that they’re actually going to throw their legacy garbage out the window and write a brand new *NIX OS from the ground up?

Please for the love of FSM, get rid of Game Center.  If Game Center is a required interface for AppleTV games, then I will not play (i.e., will not purchase, i.e., less revenue).

The Winklevoss twins might sue if pronounced like that. ;)
