    The question is who is getting the money? There are a bunch of competitors in Japan offering ADSL in the same price range.

    Interestingly enough, two years ago or so there was no ADSL in Japan. At that time you had dial-up or ISDN. Anything more than that was fantastically expensive. I had a quote to get a 256kbit line for the office for something like $4,000 a month.

    Then the presidents of Sony and other large companies got together and wrote a white paper about how Japan was so far behind in broadband, Korea and the US were way ahead and how useful BB would be. Within a year things started happening and now the floodgates have opened. Japan looks is second only to the US in ADSL users and is closing in fast.

    The point is that this is not a technical issue. Industry in the US could provide this at a great price if they chose to.

    Hey, at least some of you can get broadband! I am 400 feet out of range for DSL! 400 stinking feet! Our local cable company wanted to charge us $6000 to put in a cable line! Ah! Unlimited satellite costs $80 stinking dollars (with no speed guarantee) a month plus $400 in equipment, and a guy has to be paid to come out and set it up! Argggg!

    Ok rant over...

    It's to bad all these companies in America are more worried about getting rich quick instead of offering good Internet Service at a far price. SBC is a good example of that, SBC has the poorest DSL service I would think in the country and has the biggest Monopoly on the west coast with its phone lines and DSL service. I know how bad SBC is because I used to be a Tech for them, to bad that only lasted 2 months. SBC is so unorganzied, they have hundreds and hundreds of pages that we some how have to remember where certain things are so we can help people and then we have to be able to keep up with the changes with in the company.... at least 5 tiimes a day you would get an email saying don't do this any more do this, or another example is don't do it this way, do it this way. What a joke they are so unorganized!!! Aight enough about that peace out!!!!

    Maybe you could do like Cringley

    <a href="http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20010628.html"; target="_blank">http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20010628.html</a>;

    and find someone closer to the phone company then share the costs for ADSL with them.

    Which online site did you use to measure your speed? I like the comparison chart you have there.
