I don't think there will be a flood of young people reporting that Tim being out gave them a shining star of hope, but rest assured this has happened. Our country is 300 million and there are millions of young gay men exposed to hate still, though in the past few years it has died down. When I was young, positive words from a teacher saved my life.

I agree. Also what non gays often don't see is that preceding the coming out bit there has been a lot of soul searching and personal identity issues. Realizing you are gay often happens during early teens as sexual self awareness grows. This is linked with a lot of other existential issues related to identity (remember being a teenager?). A lot of barriers may be broken down but it is still problematic. The world is still predominantly hetro so to come out as gay is to stand out and be different, personally and publicly. Not always easy for anybody.

If the LGBT community wants to give credit where it's due, all fine and good. But it's too narrowly focused for this man. Tim's contributions are remarkable and transformative when viewed in any context, which is in this case the much larger community of mankind. What's truly amazing about Tim Cook is that he has been able to transform a company that was seen by so many as being an intense personification of one man's will and genius into a company that is very team focused, inclusive, representative, and aligned around the brand itself and what the brand represents in the minds and hearts of its customers. He has led the transformation of Apple and the results have been nothing less than staggering. Steve's support for turning over the leadership of Apple to Tim Cook was no less genius than the many other brilliant decisions that Steve made for bolstering the success of Apple.
I am confused. Being gay is not a human right, it is a sexual orientation, as much as being hetero is. Unless this organisation wants to honour him for being outspoken about a perceived taboo, for which he does deserve accolades, this is non-sense, but then it should be clarified that he is being honoured for exercising his right to freedom of speech. Although I was not aware that uttering the words "I am gay" has been prohibited in the USA. So what is the point?
