    It's also quite easy to write a little javascript that puts down a slightly derogatory message if the user is using windows. Such as:

    If you are using Mac OS X, the font is a smoothed Lucida thanks to quartz's great rendering engine. If you are not using OS X, you'll have to deal with a blocky verdana.

    There's no reason for us OS Xer's to see this, and it's of course flame bait anyway, but those ars guys don't have a good record against me anyway!

    Newton's can browse AI too, you know. </strong><hr></blockquote>

    Okay. You're using a Newton to view the boards? Isn't that kinda painful?

    You didn't see the pictures he posted a couple of weeks ago? It was really cool.

    Personally, I find the page harder on the eyes now; with less contrast than before. Now the font will be changed as well?

    Just leave well enough alone. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    Yay! Mark is back!

    Anyway, I agree that the colors need a contrast boost. Now the table borders are just annoying and hard on the eyes.

    Lucida is about a trillion times more readable than Verdana. The kerning is more even, and the hinting is nicer.

    As far as color readability goes - this isn't too bad. Although, dark grey (~70-80%) text on a white or off-white background is considered the most legible... hint, hint.

    What prompted the change was the fact that Verdana under Quartz AA is well, ugly.

    Lucida works nicely in X; Verdana looks good in 9. Gotta keep with the times.

    I think AppleInsider should be able to be seen through an AppleScript studio application...

    I love Lucidia in OS X, very nice font. Is it common on other platforms/OS's though? Compatibility is always more important (speaking from my web designer/webmaster experience).

    Incidentally, is there a way to change the font used in a &lt;TEXTAREA&gt;? Just curious...

    Fonts show up as Verdana on my Windows machine if that settles your concern, Ender. no problems with the site except it's not quite as, uh, silky as in OS X.

However, AI still uses Verdana as the secondary face choice and Helvetica as third. Just check the source:

    &lt;FONT size="2" face="Lucida Grande, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif"&gt;
