$13.95? Bah, forget that. GoDaddy.com has them for $8.95. Yes, for .com. I'm a satisfied customer; I have 12 or so domains with them.

I'd ask for a free t-shirt, but for all I know it's some pyramid scheme porn scam.

Can you give even the slightest hint of what this business is about?

Hmm, it's definitely not some pyramid scheme porn scam. That comes later.

Let's just say it has a lot to do with hip-hop culture.

OK folks, right now I'm in the process of registering my domain. I'm using GoDaddy.com since it is 8.95. I noticed something that doesn't seem so good. The original website I wanted was taken (www.ubz.com) and it says the page is in development. If the company name is UBZ or has that trademarked, then I'm going to have a lawyer battle on my hands, no doubt. Since our business is called Urban Ballerz? but usees UBZ? for short, I've decided to go ahead and do <a href="http://www.urbanballerz.com"; target="_blank">www.urbanballerz.com</a> which IS available. going through the process, but I got some questions about how I can do this. What I want is <a href="http://www.urbanballerz.com"; target="_blank">www.urbanballerz.com</a> to be a separate site that I host. However, there are options that I must select.

I would like to park this domain at Go Daddy Software for free.

I would like to forward this domain name to another one that I own ? just $9.95!*

I would like to forward AND mask this domain name to another that I own -- only $19.95.*

I would like to use another

    hosting provider.

I would like to set up my DNS now. (You can set it up later if you wish.)

What should I do? I just want it to act like a normal site. Also, it has a service plan with CGI or ASP? CGI is just computer graphic imagery I would iamgine so does that mean I can put my own animation or whatever on the site? And what is ASP

    RESPOND ASAP!!

Lol..CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface. :: scrolls down and notices that preview of thread is not in little window, screams, command-clicks back, swears at OmniWeb, sighs ::

Anyway...what are you going to host the site from? GoDaddy doesn't actually host sites for you, they just register the domain and point it to wherever, perhaps your computer serving up a site. Instead of x.x.x.x you have <a href="http://www.blah.com."; target="_blank">www.blah.com.</a>

BTW, CGI is very, very good. Cool stuff like fora (AI is a good example), plus you can generate custom web pages without there actually being a html document there, per se.

I don't fully understand it, but I'm trying to learn. Right now design is still my niche.

LOL Thanks a bunch Spart, hey I'm new at this so I just assumed CGI was what I'd normally assume it is!

Do you know what ASP is? Also it says I can set up my own DNS, what is that? Need to know which to select now.

CGI is a script that creates dynamic content on your site, these are usually written in PERL. For instance, a "contact us" form on your site - you need something to process the info the user submits, this is where a .cgi script comes in. Most ISPs include some generic ones such as a Formmail.pl (.pl means that it's written in PERL) for doing the "contact us" mentioned above. You just have to change a few parameters so that it works for your site and sends you email when someone submits.

ASP = active server page. Again, scripting that processes user info/choices and generates dynamic content. Say you're on a e-commerce site and you pick "Men's shirts". The .asp script will pull info from a database and present to the user a page of Men's shirts. I believe that these only work on NT servers.

CFM = coldfusion module. Same thing, slightly different beast really. ColdFusion is Software that generates these scripts.

Keep in mind that all of these scripts/programs all have different strengths (and weaknesses) and can do different things. They can be used for e-commerce, database integration, content managment, etc.

I'm not a programmer and this is an over-simplification of things so any experts out there are free to correct me.

    Cheers,

    Chas

The cheapest hosting package I found is from <a href="http://www.ispeed.com/hosting.html"; target="_blank">iSpeed</a>, 250mb for 3.95/month, or 1000mb for 15/month and a domain name. I'm thinking about building a website as well.

PHP is considered by some to be somewhat ghetto, however it is quite easy to use. And it's practically ready to go right off the bat for your OS X install. For fairly simple sites it'll work great.

Hell, for complex sites it'll work great too. I'm currently working on an advanced reporting system which scours our tracking database and, among other things, generates a bunch of antialiased charts on the fly. Its quite nice, and all built on PHP.

However that addresses site implementation rather than site design.

ASP is microsoft's proprietary version of PHP. And PHP is NOT ghetto. It may be free, but definitely not ghetto. TW99, I think you're getting in WAY over your head here. You should stop before you screw your brand name up with a bad reputation. Learn first, do something important later.

Hell, you should start by programming a website for yourself. Try doing a simple project, like making a web interface for a database of your CD collection. Do all the design and implementation, make sure it works then add features like sorting by genre or track name or something. Make it more complex as you go and refining the layout and structure. It may take longer, but the final project will be a lot better.

Torifile has a good idea although if you save all your files as .html it will make it alot harder to refine in the end fine out what language your are going to use for the complex stuff such as php and then save all your files as .php you dont need to do anything to you html just go about it as it where a regular page and when your ready to do the complex stuff just add the script no need to rename and relink everything

Well my business isn't making CDs, although that was probably just an analogy. I'm starting to work on what I want the design to be, and I've spoke to members here about contracting them to help design the site for me. it may be in over my head, however I need to do things such as register my domain and trademark my company because I do not someone else stealing it while I am busy planning stuff out.

I've decided I'm going to use GoDaddy.com aand get the Delux service with CGI (so I can have my forums there). The registration for 1 yr is 8.95 and it's 10.95 a month for hosting. I want to push because the time is now. I've sat around on the idea for a long time before this.
