If the $30 solution of Pixelmator will suffice, he's lying to himself suggesting that he would pay $750 for photoshop.

I don't think I could disagree more strongly. A lot of people absolutely do make that exact choice.

They do because Pixelmator is not a feasible option for them. If Pixelmator is insufficient, they don't buy it. They would purchase the cheap item if it met their needs. The $10 / month will also not break anyone's business model, even in a third world country. Sticking to CS6 is different. If it breaks with the next version of OSX, I'm sure many people will examine their options at that time. It comes down to feasibility again, because no one wants extra costs.

A full license for photoshop alone was $750, and you still had to upgrade initially every 3 versions and toward the very end at least every 2 to maintain upgrade eligibility. You would buy that when Pixelmator meets your needs for $30 and sometimes less on sale? Pardon my skepticism.

Sorry, I meant that I'd buy an off-the-shelf version of Adobe CS using a student discount, which over here used to cost about $250. I think that is the limit of what I'd pay.

You are right that I wouldn't pay $750 for the non-student version. But if I had the choice of buying Adobe CS for the price it used to be available for here vs. buying Pixelmator, I'd definitely choose Adobe.

For the other parts of the argument, I'll defer you to the posts of @bsenka.

And like I already said in my post, I am not a pro, so the choice between an Adobe CC subscription vs. a one-off purchase of Pixelmator is a no-brainer.

It can apply to pros as well. I'm not sure there's any point in my arguing with bsenka. I think he is misrepresenting this somewhat, because no one I've ever met would jeopardize their income due to a $10/month subscription. They might complain, bu that's about it.

I think you're disregarding how consumer culture works. The vast majority of people who buy almost anything that is more expensive don't do so out of necessity, they do it because they want the "good one" (and/or the "cool one"), and they're willing to pay for that. Apple would not be the success it is today if people's buying habits (for home or business) matched with your proposed scenario. I don't "need" an iPhone, an iPad, a Macbook Pro, and an iMac. I bought them because they're cool and I want them. It's also why brand names and generics exist side by side on grocery store shelves.

For many of the people who do buy Photoshop, Pixelmator absolutely WOULD be more than capable of doing what they need. They get Photoshop because it's the one they want, not because they "need" it.
