Shhh.... trying to inject logic and common-sense into this thread is only going to lead to disappointment.
It's funny reading for sure. They focus on one tiny part and are completely blind to the bigger picture.
I agree with you totally. A 5400rpm fusion drive and a 4K monitor is a steal at that price. But hey... some people on this thread are too ignorant to realize that.
Benchmarks aren't practical use. Do the hybrid drives provide enough throughput for things like FXpansion BFD? Regular 5400 rpm drives don't.
And the corporate consolidation continues. There is NO way this will be good for the consumers or the products. Hard drives have gone down in quality ever since the buyout between the larger drive makers. The drive makers have failed to adapt to the dwindling demand for mechanical drives and the increasing demand for SSD, so they instead buy someone else's expertise, which will be negatively impacted by the clash of corporate foolishness in cost reductions and whatever else, and the inevitable politics of existing management in WD not wanting Sandisk business to cannibalize the old business.
I am thinking if this would make a long term partnership with Apple. WD with Sandisk has alot of what Apple needs for Storage. WD for the HDD needed for iCloud, Sandisk has the Fusion-IO for Server workload and NAND for Apple's Consumer SSD.
Toshiba - Sandisk NAND will get 3D NAND 1Q 2016, so as soon as the merger finished it will have what Apple needs for 2017.
The only problem is Intel is getting back into NAND business, and I still think Intel is trying to Fab SoC for Apple. It will be a nice package to have for Apple.
hey, thanks for signing your message -- i wasnt certain it was you, despite the giant label containing your username immediately adjacent to your post.
You are grumbling about the $100 upgrade for 24GB of fusion. You said last year you got 128 GB. But guess what? Last year you had to pay $250 for fusion!
With the $100 upgrade more people can afford to get fusion. And if you really need more than 24 GB of flash you can get the 2 TB fusion drive.
And yes the non 4k iMacs are still a good deal. Those screens are still high quality. Tell me what competing all in one is better?
Yeah that is the problem it is an upgrade, 7200 RPM HDD at this price point should just be standard for the all in one/desktops; the upgrade should be the fusion/SDD from a 7200 RPM not a 5400 RPM. The only time you should be able to get away with that is with a laptop.

I'd argue if we expect apple to curate performance for its entry level iMac users, then all spinning storage should be removed from the line immediately.
That said, I'm not entirely convinced that Apple is wrong to still offer a slow drive option, but I can certainly say that spinning HD iMac is not for me.

Which is why I find it interesting they sold to WD.

Well, you know, that's his "thang"!
I thought you were the guy who said there was no content for 4K. Now you are talking up 5K?
SanDisk has to be one of most unimpressive companies out there.
I disagree. They still make the gold standard in SD cards. I wouldn't trust any other brand in camera.
I hope that Western Digital doesn't rock their boat.
