Um, he said literally the exact opposite. That the Apple TV is a better experience for viewing TV, except that some channels right now require authentication. So some people can cut the cord today, others will have to wait.

Yeah, he just said that it's not possible for people to cut the cord if they want certain content. This is true for any device that doesn't have exclusive content tied to other hardware like a cable box.

"Eddy Cue answers questions about original TV content saying Apple doesn't need to be in the content business, says it's hard for people to be cord-cutters but Apple TV offers a great experience whether you subscribe to cable or not"

Apple has said before they don't feel they need to be in the content business - they are in the music business but don't make music, the games business but don't make games. It's harder to be a partner and a competitor than just a partner.

Apps on the TV will help disrupt the local constraint that media distribution has. This is a way for local networks to easily reach out to hundreds of countries. Interactivity will add an extra dimension to some content. As soon as a TV show like The View, Ellen or Oprah has a TV app that allows couch potatoes to share their opinion on topics, millions of people will want in on the 'action'. Oprah could start a show and at the start ask viewers to submit questions during the show. If viewers each ask a question, possibly via Siri dictation, it can send these off and the text strings can get aggregated and a computer highlights the most commonly asked questions, which can be answered later in the show or in a followup. There can be bidding apps for prizes or deals on products and some TV apps will have donations - charity shows, TV evangelists. Perhaps they can integrate ?Pay into that if they haven't already where you'd pick an option on the TV and it can ask for authentication on the phone or watch via some cloud API. Election coverage on news channels can have mockup voting to get an idea on how the voting will go - they'd probably have to partner with multiple news channels so the results don't just skew towards their own viewership but they tend to like to promote their own side anyway. At the least, they can narrow down candidates in the same side of an election.

There really isn't a debate over whether cord-cutting is the way forward or not but this doesn't mean cutting the cable company because they tend to provide the internet access. Pre-internet, it would have meant sticking with free channels broadcast to everyone. The world has sided with the internet already, the TV networks just needed a way to adapt to it. No cable company could do this themselves because there's no way a local broadcaster or internet provider could make a single box to market worldwide as it wouldn't get adoption unless they supported competing providers. This would risk losing customers and it's obvious from cable box hardware and software that they don't have much of a clue on how to make that experience compelling. The cable companies will still make a lot of money providing the internet access and they will always have exclusive content that they can now easily put out to a global rather than local audience and with interactivity, which offers usage and direct feedback so they can improve their content offering.

I don't get the big deal about cord cutting. So you replace cable with a bunch of stand alone subscriptions

    no. here, it's simple:

    1) stop paying for cable.

    2) enjoy new free time.

    3) augment media desire with selective season purchases (iTunes) or selective monthly service (Netflix, HBO, NHL, whatever your thing is).

...nobody in their right mind feels youre going to save money by simply replacing everything w/ app versions. cord cutting is for people who dont want to spend money for 400 channels of crap. ie, the buffet model. it's for people who dont watch much so much television that theyre better off with a package. if you need all those channels and networks, then cord-cutting isnt for you and youre better off at the buffet.

So... it’s a cord cutter killer–a cord re...tier? Or does it cut the cord without fraying? Maybe it only strips the insulation off the cord and splices in another cord.
