Here is the reason screen sizes kept getting bigger
But really I have been saying for a long time and the data out there supported this, there is only a small group who really wants or needs the bigger display, grant it 4.7 is a good size but that group is not more than 50% of the users, and anything bigger than 5 is about 10% of the users. I still believe Apple did the bigger display to state the wind out of Samsung sails since this was the only place Samsung was making money which we now can see with their most recent numbers.
Price? Different sizes, same price. Never happens.
Didn't happen yet. That doesn't mean it could happen. It'd be thicker but smaller and have all the same features. After all the charge the same for a half-length Lightning cable. Yes, I did use a Lighting cable as an example. Give it 3D touch; the works. On equal footing with 6s. And for that matter, don't give the plus OIS and not the other models.
This will happen as Apple phases out iphone 5s and replace with similar but iphone 6s internals with or without force touch. In my opinion and also own family requirement, 4 out of 5 people currently using iphone 5x and would like to stick around the same form factor for portability as well handling aspect. For them for a reason, bigger is not better.
Apple understand it and kmow your family will replace their phone sooner or later anyway. And also, Apple know that there is no 4" phone out there you can buy. You didn't read Tim Cook's interview. He said once in a while Apple discontinued things that people still love but they're willing to do that for something better. There's always a trade-off.
Man, I can't wait till the iPhone Pro comes out. That way I can do all the things an iPhone was really meant to do! Then I want to get an iPad "C" model, because I like iPad, but I want an intentionally inferior model so I can pay less - maybe replace the metal with plastic - not because plastic is better in place of metal, just cheaper. Also, just to be clear, I don't want last years "top" model for less, I want this years "bottom" level model that's even less capable than last years "top" model and built cheaper - so don't give me the option to buy last years "top" model! I want a completely differe model to choose from.
Wait, I've changed my mind. I want an iPhone Plus Pro Mini Air. That way, it has a huge screen, does everything an iPhone was really meant to do, fits everywhere because it's a Mini, and is as light as possible. Oh, and I want it to be a cross between magenta and cyan with red stripes going from top to bottom.
Ahh, forget it. I'm tired of constantly asking Apple to make a new product, that's slightly different than what they already have, but that fits my very specific wants. I'll just get an Android where I have a sea of options. I like Android, they tell me upfront that they don't really know what's best and are happy to sacrifice features and building materials to give me a cheaper model (if that's what I decide I really want). It's nice to have that kind of choice/variety/fragmentation! Think of all the different devices a programmer could choose to make an app for too!
I want Apple Watch Pro and Apple TV Air. Can't wait!

want a bet on that? Thickness has never been a differentiation in Apple products and never will unless Apple marketing people all the sudden smoke something at the same time during price setting meeting.
Apple may come out with two 4" version. One premium mini 6S and other for people who wants newer cheaper iphone but no touch id, 3D touch, etc. Basically equivalent to iphone 5s and 5.
A number of people I know prefer a 4" form factor. I'm happy with the 4.7" model that fits comfortably in my pants pockets and has enough screen acreage for my needs.
I'm biased but I don't think anyone has built a better smartphone than the 5S as yet and a big part of that is the screen size being just right.
Apple did it in the past, divide the product in to two distinct lines so each could focus on competing design goals. It seems strange they haven't done that with the iPhone. Even the plus is the same product only larger.
If it's all just rumours then I think I'm going to see how good the build quality of this 5S really is.
I held onto my iPhone 5 for years waiting for a new 4"er but after it took a dunk in the hottub I was forced to get a new one so chose the 6S at launch. Took about a week to get used to the bigger size but after several months using it, I still struggle reaching across the screen with my thumb. Would've definitely stuck with 4" size had it been available this year.

Then why not just keep selling 5S for a basic phone? Why bother to create another low end 6 equivalent to 5S and waste manufacturing resources?

One hand use is the thing of the past. Get on with the new trend.

Because.... When you buy a "C"heap model, you need to know it's the "C"heap model and everyone else that sees it needs to know it's the "C"heap model. Last years model was never the "C"heap model even if it sells for the same price as this years "C"heap model. If people see you with last years model, they might think you're not upgrading because the newest iPhone isn't that great. With an obvious "C"heap model, people will know the reason you don't have this years top model is simply because you're cheap. Remember, a "C"heap model is a completely different product, that took time, effort and money to design.. I'm glad Apple has stopped being so stubborn about following Androids lead. Slowly but surely Apple is looking to Android for direction and realizing that there's a market for "C"heap products. Ever the company to respond to what the masses are asking for, they've jumped at the chance to raise the bar by lowering it. It's good business, which is why I've always been a huge Apple fan. They're constantly innovating new ways to make money. Now all of those people that have been getting cheap ass Androids can get a cheap ass iPhone!

If it doesn't get 3D Touch, so be it. Disappointing, but so be it.

The 4 inch size was an easy to handle phone but I couldn't go back to a smaller screen.
That's what choice is all about. It makes sense to offer a range of size choices for iPhone and I think 3 sizes is perfect.
According to Wang, Apple is apparently planning to debut its improved 4-inch iPhone in mid-2016 powered by an A9 processor.
This would make the new phone the iPhone 6s Mini.

The 6 is a great device, but TOO big for just putting in your jeans pocket.
I'd love a fast compact phone with sufficient memory and decent camera. I'm not keen on perpetually carrying two devices around..
Any hints of making it even smaller, like, something in between 3.5 and 4 inch?

I have both, 4s for work [work number], 6 for play [private number], 4s is robust, small. The 's' by the way stands for SLOW.

My 6+ fit in my straight leg jeans just fine unless you wear skinny jeans.
