I agree with torifile, and I'm not an apologist for Apple. The $49.95 is not a big gamble. If .Mac is not offering me a $100 value a year from now, I'll say goodbye to it. I was wondering whether Apple might offer just email, but I think not. They likely consider email a tiny piece of what they see for the future of .Mac, and there are many other options for those who just want email.

I understand that, of course, I even said it in my last post:

$50 is more tolerable, obviously, and at that price I could understand subscribing if you recognize that you're still overpaying in the hopes that it improves with time.

What services did they show at MWNY?

If you say Virex I'll laugh.

iBackup - Can't even make CD-RW backups if you don't have a subscription, how very M$! (Correct me if I'm wrong)

    iCal - Honestly, publishing your calendar to the web... <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Of course, crippling once-free technology for pay isn't new to Apple. The sudden emergence of a Quicktime Pro comes to mind.

But this, as QT Pro did then, caused initial outrage and will fade into being accepted policy from the mothership.

There are two options for those who want to continue using their mac.com e-mail address, not "many other": pony up for a service that's not worth the money (.Mac) or piggy-back off someone else for $10 if you can find them.

If Apple considers e-mail a tiny part of it then they are largely ignoring their userbase.

Anyone up for making a parody of the 1984 ad?

Okay groverat, I'm a little dense. I just figured out what is meant by piggybacking. Cool idea, but it shouldn't be necessary, if Apple would offer individual accounts for say $15 a year. I mentioned earlier that I wished they would give us that option. Right now, that is all I use, except for iCards once in a while. My comment about a "small part" is how I think Apple sees email in their vision of what .Mac will become. I'm hoping this is the case, that .Mac will have so much that email will seem like a small part of it. I'm just going to try it for this first year, and see what happens. It has to improve a whole bunch, with things that are useful to me, if I am going to stay with it.
