Anyone have a solution for using ones own domain with iCloud...? I can't seem to find a way to do this using mac mail? Are there any solutions out there?
It's easy enough to add a POP or IMAP mail account to Apple Mail, just select 'other' from the list under Accounts and fill in the info. You are not 'using iCloud' of course you are using your own mail server associated with your own domain name.
"Mac owners who use Gmail know Apple's Mail app for OS X is less than perfect"
Do we really? From anecdotal experience (colleagues, peers, personal), Mail really is just fine. This AI post reads and feels a bit like an advertorial. The only alternative client that came real close, for me, was Sparrow. And it was killed by Google itself.
I also have déjà vu ... didn't we just go through this a few weeks ago? I recall a similar comment to yours at the time.
Outlook is my favorite email client and I've tried many. I love the all-in-one integration of calendar, contacts and meeting manager. I also love that it capitalizes the first word of every sentence, and takes advantage of the years' worth of autocorrections I've built in MS Word's custom dictionary (I'm a terrible speller and typist, so these functions are invaluable to me). But I don't use Gmail so can't speak to Outlook's management of Gmail's functionality.
For my personal Gmail account I just forward from Ail's servers to my personal iCloud email.
For a business email, use the Chrome Browser on the Mac (and the great Gmail app on my iPhone), to keep those separate from my personal accounts.
Since I'm very sensitive about personal information, I don't use any cloud and limit my use of Gmail. Google's Apps cause a conflict for me, they are usually very good even the best, but I know their reward is getting all the info on me personally that they can. For several years Gmail saved me on the iPhone when out of my country, my ISP couldn't send Emails from other countries. So I had to send my Emails via Gmail when out of the country. Hopefully thieves don't subscribe to Google's info. Fortunately that problem seems to have been resolved, so I now mainly use Gmail for my sports events and ignore resulting sports equipment popups.
The best e-mail client is Eudora Mail, hands down. Unfortunately, it has been discontinued. So, Apple Mail is the choice now.
Yes Eudora was the best Email client, so good in fact we only started leaving it last year. I had tried a few other non PPC mail pgms, like Thunderbird, but wasn't impressed. If PPC support had continued with MacOS X after Snow Leopard 10.6 I'd still be using Eudora.
Early last year I finally switched from my G4/1.25 MDD Tiger Eudora to using my Mini 2.5 I5 Mavericks with Mail. My wife will be changing to El Capitan and Mail in a few weeks on my early yr 2009 2.0 C2D 2MB Mini. With an external SSD it is quite fast. Unfortunately the conversion of Eudora mailboxes to Mail mailboxes does not bring along attachments. So they will have to stay detached.
I tried to use Mail for 6 months with MacOS X 10.3, but it was a disaster. It crashed a lot, finally froze solid. Fortunately I was running Mail in parallel to old reliable Eudora. When I installed Tiger 10.4 Mail unfroze using the same mailboxes, but I wasn't about to trust it. Also that Mail was short on functions.
Mail on Mav is doing well, although it still crashes a few times each week. Fortunately no emails seem to have been lost. I really like Smart mailboxes, but miss emails opening up to a large sized window overlapping the mailbox list.
