It's about time a company might have the guts to get rid of a connector that has roots going back to the late 1700's. Sure they keep adding functionality by breaking the pin into multiple segments but it's the same old audio connection with stereo and high fidelity running through it, never digital. The connector takes up too much space that can be used for extra battery capacity or additional circuitry. Worst of all its design is difficult to make waterproof. Apple took a lot of heat about the Lightning connector but the truth is it was always designed as a multipurpose port. I applaud Apple for getting rid of old tech if that is their plan. It will give Samsung and others the push they need to do the same. Unfortunately the need for companies to support two different interfaces is unfortunate. I doubt Apple will license Lightning or make it an open standard.
Did you notice that Samsung managed to make all the ports on the S7 waterproof - including the headphone socket?  The extra space  for more battery capacity argument, leaks like a sieve.  The socket takes up about only 0.28% of the volume of a 6S.  Running Bluetooth constantly would consume far more power than that provided by a miniscule increase in battery size.  A digital signal isn't inherently superior to an analogue one.

Ha.  What if someone designed and manufactured this case entirely based on the rumors (in order to be ready at iPhone 7 launch).  And now it's being used to substantiate the rumors that caused it.  Hilarious.

Had dinner last night with a friend who just got his hands on the new Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and the OLED display was gorgeous! It was the first time I ever felt jealous about a phone other then one made by Apple. I hope Apple recognizes that the competition is for real and they can't just do minor incremental updates like before. If the iPhone 7 has better battery life, an upgraded camera, a stronger screen display, and allows for wireless charging, that would be wonderful.

It would be a big mistake ditching the jack:

    - forced to buy expensive Lightning based headphones or converter cable.
    - the Lightning port isn't very durable (flat design is nice for charging, not to walk around with)
    - No possibility of charging the phone while listening to music through headphones, which I often do.
    - Blutooth setup / management is something users don't want to deal with if they're on the go.

I think Jony Ive understands what Stereo means... i.e. speakers at both ends when you hold the phone horizontally!
    You're holding it wrong!
