I went on Friday too. I ditched work a little early so I could drive home, change, and grab the bus to the Grove. (I hate the parking structure there) I got there at about 5.40 to find a line, but not a huge one. I wasn't in the first group in, but I got in by 6.15.

The store seemed smaller than I expected from the front, but of course, they do have to have a stock room. It seems to me to be only incrementally larger than the Glendale or Northridge store. But the (very dramatic) glass staircase takes up a lot of the first floor. The staff is extremely friendly and they must have pulled a few people in from Northridge and Glendale, or they just have a huge staff. There were 20 or 30 staff member whooping it up and working the line.

I was glad for the water, since although the sun was starting to set, it was still at our backs, and still fairly warm. Loads of mall-crawlers were asking what we were in line for, and quite a few were visibly aghast that we were waiting in line to get into a computer store. I remarked to the guy in front of me that the next person who asked what are we getting that we should be waiting in line I'd answer with "free botox"

I walked through, took a look at the new iMac with the new OS, noticed they didn't have the remote iPod earphones yet, got a t-shirt and left.

I'm really happy it's open- it's right on the way home from work, and even a do-able walk from my house on a cool day. (Yes, Virginia, people do walk in LA <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> )

By the time I left the line was four blocks long. They must have had at least a few thousand people there.

doesn't anyone think that women in skirts would be bothered by the glass floor/staircase?

They are frosted. It would be like trying to look at privates through Hudson River water.

There doesn't seem to be direct access underneath the stairs either.

Yeah, the glass is opaque. We do it all the time too. The Apple Store stair is also not normally accessible directly underneath it. The glass that forms the guardrails supports the treads and comes straight down to the floor, so it's closed off on 3 sides with the fourth being "no man's land" near the back-of-house stuff.
