As it is, I haven't seen a compelling reason to upgrade from my 6 Plus. I used to skip generations, and I didn't see anything in the 6S Plus that warranted the upgrade other than the better LTE antennas. If the 7 isn't that different, I think I'll just keep my phone and wait for something that inspires me to upgrade again. Be it the 7S Plus or the 8.
If the rumors are true, then we have an iPhone 7 that is New Material, - Likely much better at Radio Reception Signal. Integrated Radio Frequency Chip - Using TSMC InFo - It is a little over stretch i think Baseband processor would be a better fit, but anyway integration will bring lower power usage. Larger Battery - As Shown with Leaks TSMC 16nm FFC - Lower Battery,
All these will point to one iPhone 7 biggest selling point, battery life! Assuming Apple could get 20% energy reduction, and also 10% increase in battery. That is a 40% Increase in battery life!
If that's true, that's compelling enough for me to invest in a new iPhone. I'm not a major user of one apparently as I use mine throughout the day and still have 63% battery life on my 6 Plus at the end of the day. Probably because I don't use Facebook. To me, it's all about the radios and improved reception, as I spend a good portion of time out hiking and find cell reception far less than desired, but the new phones do better, so the new radios and antennas are likely better at LTE than my 6 Plus. I don't use an Apple Watch, nor do I see a particular need for Force Touch. Having 128GB of memory is a choice I'll never regret though.
Ugh. I hope they aren't trying to shrink it again. I'm ready for a well rounded model that covers all its bases. Samsung, for the first time ever, has almost removed all of my complaints about the galaxy except Android. I want Apple to focus on improved battery life, and basically just go back and make sure that everything is rounded out. Not that I think Apple is in trouble, but I would like to see that happen. It would be a bit of a relief. CAN'T LET SAMSUNG GET AHEAD.
This Apple-obsession with thinness is getting asinine.
you cannot build the devices of the future (see any sci fi show) if you're satisfied with and stop advancing past engineering techniques of today. had Apple not learned new techniques while thinning the iPhones we wouldn't have the iPad Pro.
There is no special engineering magic that needs to be discovered or developed in order to make thinner phones. The required engineering skills and knowledge have been around for some time, the mechanical watch industry being a good example. The biggest issue is the size of the components like the screen thickness and, in particular, the camera these days. It's the component manufacturers who do the work that allows phones to keep shrinking in size. There are quite a few manufacturers of Android phones that make devices thinner than iPhones, it's not an Apple engineer exclusive knowledge set or capability.
Just got my Special Edition today. And it's glorious! (Also loving my iPad Pro ... the bump not so much.) They really need to get rid of the bump, and I don't mean make the bump thinner. I mean make the rest of the phone as thick as the camera needs to be. Holding the SE in my hand feels perfect. Even fi they just had the same size internals and just left more air in the phone I think the 6 would have felt better in the hand.
Indeed.
I'd rather have a thicker device with a longer battery life than one that has less runtime just to be thinner. Like the 6/6S size is perfectly fine, but I wound up sticking on a Otterbox on it, because I was worried about dropping it on it's face. I've so far dropped it twice, of which one of those times was due to the lightning cable being too short. I know the 6S is stronger, but that doesn't mean that It's any less slippery or any more durable if something strikes the screen.

A mechanical watch that is 3.5mm thin:
