I certainly hope that Apple makes this an "aggressive" update.  It is OK to keep the case design the same, as the size and weight are fine - smaller than competitive smartwatches and less than many traditional watches.  The strap mid-mount design nicely pulls the bottom into the wrist, so the watch looks much thinner in use than in a picture (for those without one that complain about the thickness).

However, that doesn't preclude hardware updates like:
    - Yet more band types
    - New case materials
    - Another sensor or two into the unit which increases its use (e.g. GPS, barometer)
    - Improved water resistance
    - Introduction of smart bands

IMO Apple Watch is hugely important to Apple going forward - the most important category for growth considering the smartphone market is maturing.  Over the next 3-5 years, they need aggressive updates which broaden the uses, develop positive attention in media for leading this space, advance the design to keep it iconic but fresh.  I am really hoping this is not just a SOC update.  That will be useful, and will keep the Apple faithful interested, but won't do much to increase sales.

I'll be in for at least one Mk II, for the performance increase, to see what that's all about.

Maybe one or two more. I don't have a Space Black Stainless Watch, or Space Black Link or Milanese bands. I don't care for the regular Link or Milanese bands.
