Apple beefs up 2016 Back to School sale, offers free Beats with Mac, iPhone or iPad purchase

Apple's 2016 Back to School sale is an improvement from last year, offering a better model of Beats headphones with the purchase of an eligible Mac, and also expanding the promotion to include free headphones with the purchase of an iPad Pro or newer iPhone.

Apple is now offering a free pair of Beats Solo2 Wireless Headphones to students and faculty with the purchase of an eligible new Mac. The headphones carry a retail price of $299.95.

That's an improvement from last year, when Apple offered the wired BeatsSolo2 headphones with its annual promotion. Customers could pay an extra $100 to upgrade their free pair to the wireless model, but that's not necessary with this year's beefed-up promotion.

The deal applies to all new MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro purchases. The Mac mini desktop is not included in the sale, and enrollment verification is required.

In another improvement from last year, Apple is also offering a free pair of Beats Powerbeats2 Wireless headphones with the purchase of an iPad Pro, or a handset from the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s series. There were no free headphone offers with iPhone or iPad in last year's Back to School sale.

The fitness-focused Powerbeats 2 Wireless headphones have a retail price of $199.95, or $100 less than the Beats Solo 2 Wireless models that come with new Mac purchases. Both connect to Mac and iOS devices through Bluetooth and feature integrated rechargeable batteries.

Shoppers -- both students and otherwise -- looking to save more money on the purchase of a new Mac or iPad can view the AppleInsider Price Guide, which features a number of exclusive discounts on MacBook Pros, the new 12-inch MacBook with Retina display, iPad Pros and more. Deals include up to $70 of Apple's latest 12-inch MacBook, and $280 off a 128-gigabyte iPad Pro with Wi-Fi and LTE.

I'm in if there is new product to buy. Or is this just to move old stock and will not apply to new models?

This is actually a pretty good deal considering they're the wireless version. Prepare for the resale value of these to plunge though.

Proof of the actual value vs. cost of Beats. For a third of the price you can get a pair of Grados or Sennheisers.

Just out of curiosity, why is this called "Back to School", then also say "Add Beats to your Summer"?

Apple is never going to give away Apple hardware for free, so Beats it is. It seems like Beats hardware has mostly been left alone. Let's not forget the headphones part of Beats was put under Phil Schiller & marketing not engineering.

I'd put the value of those beats at around $150-$200 bc that's about the best sale I've seen on these. The problem for me is that we'd by paying full retail and tax to buy at Apple. That negates the value of the headphones when I can buy at Adorama/B&H/eBay for a substantial discount and no tax.

Because the back to school buying season starts in the summer. Most people don't wait for school to start to buy the things they know they need for the new school year. Also, you will see the main text mentions buying them for college. Plus Apple also calls out education discounts on Mac and iPad.

You’ll get wireless Beats headphones when you buy an eligible Mac, iPad, or iPhone for college. And save on a Mac or iPad with Apple education pricing.*

    No way.

You can't find WIRELESS Solo2 for $150 anywhere
Sure you can. It took a Google search all of 5 seconds and I found three. Granted one was listed as "refurbished" but still. Regardless this is a pretty sweet deal.

Actually, ~7 years ago they gave away iPod Classic 160GB and an iTunes voucher with the back to school promotion. It's possible they might bundle in a lower priced Apple Watch in the next few years.
