I am not sure why there are complaints for a company charging for a feature regardless of what it costs them. Clearly there is value to have this so why not charge for it? Based on the car price $300 is not bad considering what they charge for other upgrades.

The point is, it looks bad on them because most if not all other auto manufacturers are offering similar updates for free. Someone who has already paid more than most for a vehicle shouldn't be charged for whats free elsewhere. Kinda puts a bad taste in your mouth.

Agree with your point of view, but on the other hand: With a cheap or free Samsung tablet, you get or buy a cheap headphone. While with a firm priced iPhone, you buy a firm priced Apple headphone (or other accessory)

There's only one reason BMW is doing this: because they can. They have that level of reputation and branding that allows them to charge for it, and buyers will pay for it. It's that simple.
It's kind of like how Apple charges a lot for extra RAM in their computers.
My wife wants a Toyota, but I want a Honda if only for CarPlay support.
So you want a lousy sounding stereo and a bug filled DisplayAudio head unit, just so you could have CarPlay? Oh, and the fact that Toyota's minivan is far better than Honda? You should also review Honda's website because the Odyssey does not offer CarPlay. Only the Accord and Civic models offer it. Honda does not offer software upgrades either. You have to wait until Honda rolls out CarPlay to other cars, which may take a year or two. That is how Honda operates. And there sound systems are awful, always have been.
CarPlay is very useful. I have been using it for the last month. Just the fact that now I never have my phone in my hands is a huge plus. Something that I used to do since version 1.
It's called Bluetooth and Siri. I never have to hold my phone either, and I don't have to plug it in to use all the Bluetooth features, or Siri.

Exactly! The people who find it surprising that they charge $300 have just never owned a luxury automobile. If you upgrade your software, a highly trained technician has to do the installation, hence they charge you. They charge to update your on board maps as well.
BMW does offer free maintenance, free car washes, free coffee, bottled water, internet, TV, courtesy vehicles, charging station, etc, which is included in the original purchase price. They have the best of everything at the dealerships including the best mechanics and technicians. If you can't afford the $300 upgrade, you can't afford a BMW.

I get all this when I go to my lowly Toyota dealership to service my Prius. Free donuts, too. Granted, my car is not exactly the ultimate driving experience, but it reached 100,000 miles without a single problem. Don't know if BMW has this level of reliability now, but it certainly did not a decade ago. Buying a BMW was about as ruinous an experience as buying a boat.
