Mac gamers will gain full functionality with Sony's DualShock 4 controller, including touchpad, vibration, and stereo headset jack -- via a new USB wireless adapter priced at $24.99.

Sony's DualShock 4 USB Wireless Adapter offers support for both Apple's macOS and Microsoft Windows. While Sony controllers can connect to Macs via a standard wired USB connection, the adapter will offer full wireless functionality for all of the controller's capabilities, including its light bar and motion sensors.

In particular, the adapter will be of interest to Mac users who utilize the Remote Play feature of Sony's PlayStation 4. Launched earlier this year, Remote Play for Mac allows users to stream content from a PS4 console to a second screen.

Another key part of the wireless adapter launch is Sony's PS Now cloud-based service, powered by its purchase of Gaikai back in 2012. However, at launch in the U.S., PS Now support will be limited to Windows PCs, as Sony simply said it is "evaluating Mac support."

PS Now boasts support for more than 400 PlayStation games, including popular franchises like "Uncharted," "God of War," and "Ratchet and Clank."

In recent years, Sony has been a supporter of Apple hardware, making its PlayStation Vue streaming TV service available on iPad soon after it launched.

Would be curious if this will also work with the PS3 controller?

There's possibly some interoperability, but I would wait until the community verifies that.

The PS4 controller already works as a wireless controller on Mac's. I've been using PS3/PS4 controllers for years on my iMac/Macbook.

I think it's geared towards people who are using Remote Play on their Mac's. The controllers already work out of the box, but not all features work. With the new adapter, all features will work.

You can already pair a PS3 Sixaxis controller with any Bluetooth Mac running OS X Mountain Lion or newer.
