no new case at MWNY?

MOSR says:

"it will generally follow the existing QuickSilver color scheme and form factor, but sport new front and back panels and updated detailing in places such as the four-corner handles"

Dang!

I so hate el Capitan. It is H U G E, L O U D and looks like a plastic bag. Sure hope that they at least fix that embarrasing flaw with the four/five spoke inner/outer fanguard. Shame on Jonathan!

If the case is still El capitan, I'm not gonna buy a new PoMa this month, no matter what's inside.

let me save eveyone some typing before the kiddies chime in.

ryan is clueless. MOSR is a joke. MOSR doesn't know cheese. I just read MOSR for entertainment value.

    there happy?

    Now let's go onto discuss.

how would white look added to the trim of the same G4 enclosure? It would match the keyboard.

<img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> You've got to be kidding. You're complaining about something THAT minor on the BACK of the case? Do you have your machine surounded by mirrors so you can appreciate its asthetic qualities from all angles?

guys, it's likely El Capitan is going to stay with us for a while (it's much easier to get into than the old beige cases, that's for sure). Why the hatred for it? Did an El Capitan case fall on your Mother and kill her? Do we really need new fins on the back and grill on the front every three years?

As much as I want to see something new I have to say what's inside is MUCH more important. As far as El Capitan goes : if it isn't broken don't fix it (at least until you come up with something better ) .

    El Capitan must die.

My El Capitan sits in pieces in my garage, and I have replaced it with a Lian-Li silver case, which blends in totally with the room this computer is in.

I like having 2 internal optical drives, and I like not having the ATA cable from the 2nd hard disk detaching all the time. Also, El Capitan is unstable on carpet.

Lian-Li cases are the ugliest, cheesiest most over-priced pieces of machine stamped aluminum I've ever seen in my entire life.

They pump those things out by the hundreds - for pennies each, and then sell them for upwards of $100

    That being said.

I wouldn't be too surprised by a pseudo redesign. Makes a lot of sense actually.

Slim it down, tighten up the curves, make it a little bit more space efficient - and wait until the Big New Machine before totally revampign the case design.

I just hope it's a little smaller, quieter, and can hold a bit more stuff - easier.

and yeah, i dont like it tipping over either.

So, not muich extra plastic in the new case. It will be a tower of course..

The current case is too loud, so hopefully they will address that. A firewire port up front would be nice too. What I really want to see is something that looks more like the cube.

If Apple can design a better looking and more functional case then the current one, I say "let's see it". I love the case. It looks better than any case I've seen (I haven't seen the case referred to in this thread) and is a dream to work with. It's only loud because it's too nice to hide under your desk so you get to hear the fans and hard drive.

Looks are not everything. Buis referred to the noise problem of the quicksilvers. See <a href="http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/quicksilver_noise_2/quieting_quicksilver_3.html"; target="_blank">Quicksilver noise reduction page on xlr8yourmac</a>

    ***Looks at Lian-Li

    ***Looks at cinder

    ***Disagrees. Totally.

The Lian-Li doesn't have the genius of an Apple case. The Quicksilver is great for what it is, with flat cables running up the sides, a curved case for the fan and latch, etc etc. But it is nice.

I might have take some pics sometime. Maybe at the LAN party tomorrow. I don't own a digicam .

Looks are a matter of taste. But if you like the case or not, compare it to the other current enclosures from Apple. It just has a different style the the rest of the 'family'.

The current cases are quite practical (handles, easy access door) but there's still room for improvements.

    My personal favorites are:
    • as many others already have pointed out: room for an internal second optical (5 1/4") drive!

    • sound muffling!!!! Apple built some very quiet machines (original iMac, iCube). They probably won't get the PowerMac to be that quit, but it could be much less noisy. Most PC shops offer cases with internal muffling, why not the Mac?

Not everybody has enough space on his desktop. I couldn't even place a cube on my desk, but below my desk, I have enough room for a big tower. So for me a tower has practically a zero footprint but an iMac would be too big.

Never spent a couple a grand on a computer based on its looks. The tower could be a tad more space conscious though.

Bring back the Cube! Perhaps we could double it in size\tand call it the G4(5) Hunk?

Um, no. If Apple took the Lian-li aluminum design and added their tradmark latch and door then it would be great.

I want to see less plastic in apple's designs. Plastic is cheezy. I have my blue and white sitting beside my lian-li pc65. Guess which one looks classier, more professional and more capable?

Aluminum gives the case a smart look. Plastic just makes it look like it belongs beside a crib.

comparing the B&W G3 to the liam-li is like comparing what one leaves in a toilet to it. I never liked the B&W cases. Apple has since refined the design, and I, as others, believe there are still more refinements. Like any good artist, Apple seems to keep working on it's designs until they get it right, on the whole that is. They didn't give the original iBook much of a chance ;-) . Just look at the evolution of the various products... particularly the CRT iMac. I think they got it right at the end.

Dependingon the innards of the upcoming PoweMacs I suspect either the same QS casing we already know or an overhauled variant of it. The good ol' El Capitan casing still has superior quality in terms of accessibility. I haveen't yet seen another casing that comes even close to it's latch a flip mechanism. Also the wiring on the motherboard is a masterpiece as it doesn't obstruct the moving parts at all. Despite that I still have to criticise the mounting if the optical and zip drive. They're still far from perfect. They're still not that comfortable to slide in and out as I'd like them to have. The lower bay beeing 3.5" instead of 5.25" is an offending design that has been criticised since the b&w introduction. I never understood why Apple made it that way, but it's obviously intentional as they never changed it despite popular demand. Noise is a factor especially since the QS machines. My beloved Dual450 is much more silent. Using different fans (Pabst is expensive but very good) might help. i hope to see an improvement here because the later generation G4 chips we're hoping for run a bit less hot. (Xserve features dual Ghz procs, but has more laminar airstrem to cool them due to the flat nature of the housing.

As for overall outer design, the way is clearly ponited out by the iBook and flat iMac as well as the iPod. The future is white, maybe a matte white (like the iMac). Espect a silver reflecting Apple Logo on the front to resemble the current line of flat displays.

The QS and the B&W cases are the same. So there's a different color and the speaker has been beveled. Not much of a difference. I want to see a much larger tower. Two, if not three optical drives. Apple seems to think that everyone would only want one optical drive since they've made the superdrive. But a lot of people need multiple drives. That's why I have 2 external scsi drives as well as a usb writer to go along side my internal writer.
