Here's an out there idea... Why not call AppleCare instead of complaining to a blog? I know that's such a hard concept to comprehend, but maybe these people should try that first. The sound quality on my iPhone 7 is awesome. I have no complaints, and if I did, I would contact Apple about it first.
Apple support forums are considered a blog?
i think he was obviously referring to AI, from this line in the article: "according to complaints received by AppleInsider". whether this is a blog or not is splitting hairs, as his question remains valid -- why would one complain to a tech site rather than use their support options to resolve the problem? because controversy.
but you knew that.
Yes you're right he did know that. He has the tendency to pick and choose what he wants to critique to make himself look better. It actually has the opposite effect.
So far so good for me, 7 in 256GB. No issues that prevent me from doing things like I can do before in my 6s. If you have problem, take it in to the store, let them help you out.

these are the same people posting their daily mood on twitter and facebook, as well as every meal they eat, and pics of themselves after every workout with dumb captions. They also probably tweet that their house is being broken into rather than call 911
Wow! That's really cool, how you guys already know what those folks did first, and then, did or didn't do next... (But, how is it substantively different from what we all are doing now?)

Here's an idea, perhaps putting it on a blog helps others know about a concern.
Had the same problem on my new 7plus. Solution was quite simple. Remove the 6s plus tempered glass screen protector from the screen thus opening up the correct size ear piece speaker hole. All of the old screen protectors have the wrong size (smaller) openings. You must purchase the 7plus screen protectors to have the proper opening. Works great now! Sometimes the simplest solutions to problems prove easiest. I would hazard a guess that most early adopters of the phones are using their shelf stock of screen protectors. Just doesn't work!
Yeah, "some"...uh... "one"... "may be my fault"..."Don't tell Apple and whine to some random tech blog"... WTH... They need clicks. Yeah, inform Apple and if you just got it they'll swap it out or fix it on the spot, end of story. Of course, that cuts down on the whining quotient so it cannot be left that way...
I have a 7+ on AT&T definitely having issues. I have the hissing noise and the person on the other end sometimes hear me sometimes not. I thought maybe the little update today would solve it but didn't. Was gonna wait to see if there's another software update before trekking an hour to the Apple Store
I had the same issue with a brand new 7+ on AT&T. I didn't have a screen protector nor a case on it. It was so bad I took it to the Apple Store store yesterday. They told me they could send it back for repair. So I ended up just trading it for a regular 7, the new 7 is crystal clear.

I did contact Apple about the issue and so have others. In fact Apple has just blamed it on Verizon and said nothing is wrong. I ended up just returning my 7 plus on AT&T and getting a regular 7. The new phone works correctly. In my case it wasn't a case or screen protect either.

if you're having the issue, you don't need a blog to tell you about it. you just call apple and get it resolved, up to and including replacing the unit.

so despite your claim that apple did nothing, they did, in fact, offer you multiple options to resolve your issue, and you chose one and resolved it. got it.
Well, that's what happens when you release a product for the first time, usually later iterations get better. Oh wait, they already released a dozen phones since 2007.....:)
This is the first thing I noticed on my new iphone 7. Made a test call to a landline plus have taken several cell calls from friends and all are muddy, far-away sounding, distinctly lower quality than my iphone 5 which is clear, crisp and loud. A real bummer, but then again I hardly use it as an actual phone ; ) Still, hoping this is a software/carrier issues and not hardware because taking a phone in to get it replaced is a PITA.
When I worked on iOS phone support for Apple (3 years ago) I had a guy who was having trouble hearing his phone. Turned out in his new phone excitement, he had left the protective (and nearly invisible) shipping film on the phone when he put it in a case. The film was muffling the sound. When we figured it out he was mortified, but I assured him it happened all the time.
The question is, is this with a headset/earpods/lightning headphones, or is this the onboard speaker/microphone.
Because it seems to me that there should be no change from the iPhone 4/5/6 in regards to call quality, especially since all operators are now using VoLTE, so unless the codec being used is ridiculously poor, it shouldn't be happening.
People who have an iPhone 7 who want to confirm this, need to make a call to a landline (wired phone), another LTE phone(iPhone 5S/6/6S,) and another iPhone 7. If it only sounds distorted in all phone calls, that sounds like some kind of decoding problem or echo-cancellation problem.
Done all the usual landline and high signal but the call is muffled and distant on the receivers end.. Apple issue as usual ..? when will we get an answer I've sent message to Apple but usual pre parrot answer about reset. check these articles. bring it in if you think it is faulty etc I purchased from john lewis and dont know if apple will test in their branches or not
We just got our IPhone 7+. The call sound quality is the absolute WORST we have ever heard in a cell phone ever. It is unusable it is so horrifically bad. We tried the various 'fixes' listed online to no avail.
And it is a widespread problem, we discovered. Even the Apple rep knew this to be true. We are returning this phone.

But, as someone else noted, others have told me it's hard for them to hear me. No issues me hearing them.
Other than that I think the call quality is amazing.
