No matter what they say or which way they portend most of these threads should be titled " My wishful thinking " as they have nothing to do with reality.

I agree, there will be a Next Generation processor. What Apple decides to call it is unknown. I think it would be in Apple's best interest to go with a processor design that Motorola and IBM can BOTH work on and manufacture. That way there's innovation at both ends and it works out best for everyone.

Guys (and girls?), the name of the chip is decided by the manufacturer, not apple. Motorola will make a G5. Cisco has already signed a contract to buy a bunch. Apple just buys them, they don't make them, design them, name them, release them soon, anything, they just BUY them.

I'm absolutely certain Apple has a hand in designing PPC processors; witness the fact that they had a hand in designing Altivec (Velocity Engine at One Infinite Loop).

So true, APPLE DOESN'T MAKE THE CPU CHIPS....PERIOD.

They're stuck with whatever comes out and have to make do with what they get, for which, I think, they have done a remarkable job.

It will be interesting to see what they can piece together this time.

All in all, they have got a lot out of nothing with they're hardware/software combination.

(edit 7-July-02 - I always have liked the underdog, even the cartoon was a classic)

The Apple whiners (they no who they are, or we can start a whiner thread to see who shows up) ought to face the reality of Apple's situation rather than grabbing the bull by the tail to face the situation.

    Like yer good self?

"...or we can start a whiner thread to see who shows up)"

    Go ahead. Should be interesting...

"...ought to face the reality of Apple's situation"

    Which is..?

"...rather than grabbing the bull by the tail to face the situation."

What? What are you talking about?! What 'situation'? (Care to elaborate...we know how eloquent BigC...(!) is...)

Indeed. Maybe it is you who does not grasp the seriousness of Apple's position?

I don't think Apple can go another half year with slightly boosted G4s.

Moltar!! Ahh! I had forgotten about that great guy!

    "Mmmm... CHiPs..."

Pardon me, while I download every [I]Space Ghost Coast to Coast[I] episode now, and watch Moltar control every aspect of the show using only a two-state lever and a TV screen. Now THAT is an interface...

    Didn't somebody say that about a year and a half ago on a board like this? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

It's justified. Their market share has been shrinking since then and will continue to do so unless Apple brings out something of value.

Well, they can...but they're going to look ridiculous doing so in the face of Hypertransport Clawhammers!

The laptops. They'll do okay. The consumer desktops? Hmmm. I'm not sure. The Towers?

I'm sure somebody on these boards will think a 1.5 G4 on Rio will be competitive...

Re: 'Serious'. Apple's got to be careful. Their 'power'Mac sales are at an all time low. Bad economy or no...their 'power'Mac line may turn into the Amiga that time forgot... If CPU development remains this apathetic...it'll happen eventually. The pro sales will keep shrinking...

The aggressive high end software purchases make me think there's hope for Apple's 'high end' hardware. I kinda think something is waiting in the wings...but it may not come until as late as next Summer... An IBM for next Summer. Just not this one?

I'm waiting for BC to chime in about now...

(Or maybe S.S with his cyclical line of BS.)

Or maybe...just because we're having a good ol' fashioned debate...somebody will close the thread?

Hmm. Okay. I'll post something relevant.

Steve Jobs will give us...er...a dual 1.2-1.33 G4. It'll cost the same excruciating £2, 500 inc Vat. The low end will be 1 gig G4. But with crippled level 3 stash. It'll include no monitor...but may have...shock(!) DDR ram and Xserve pseudo double time architecture/bus thing. It'll come with a Geforce 4mx and cost £1, 350 inc VAT. The middle model? Who cares? It'll cost near £2000 inc vat so you might as well slap down the extra £500 for the extra processor. All models will come with stingy amounts of ram but hey...

...at least they'll ship with the stunning Jaguar as a saving grace. (Which will at least make us tink Apple's G4 is faster than it really isn't...)

huh? did you not read, like everyone else here, that apple's marketshare has gone up .5% in the past year?

If it goes up to Steve Jobs aim of 10% in the next year with Apple's current pricing and out of date specs then I'll paint my bottom blue.

I just hope Steve Jobs isn't going to be giving out tins of blue paint for his 'One last thing...'

Try something else Lemon. Your chronic whining got old 3 months ago.

Send me your address and I will send you a old 1.2 GHZ Athlon system I have collecting dust in the closet. That will then keep you busy and you can stay away from here.

Anyways, I see 1.5 GHZ systems coming out, certainly 1.4 GHZ with 1 GHZ taking the lowend.

Firewire 2, new faster FSB and DDR memory.

Certainly won't come NEAR pleasing you Lemon Barf Barf but you would whine at 2 GHZ anyways.

So where's all this extra market share coming from? The LCD imacs that no one is buying and which are filling up warehouses? Or the powermacs that no one has bought in the last 6 months?

Maybe it's the ibooks or powerbooks, those are nice and as much as I 've heard they've been selling a fair bit. But I doubt they could make up for the short sales of powermacs and imacs.
