Considering his experience is with magazines my guess is he's either going to work for the marketing department or the software UI team (Alan Dye, who leads that team, came from Schiller's org).
Magazines have nothing in common with UI design.
Well they certainly have nothing in common with industrial design. Anyway the fact is Alan Dye runs Apple's UI team at Apple and he was a creative director in Phil Schiller's marketing organization.

Maybe this is Apple finally taking revenge against all the shite Wired has printed about Apple over the years...

Hopefully Jony Ives will be moved permanently to the historic catalogue and Christmas tree side job division (a lateral move with no reduction in salary of course).

And this Sorrentino new hire will bring a breath of fresh air heading the Existing Products division.

    (fingers crossed)
What makes you think he'd have anything to do with industrial design?
It's a hope he will take over industrial design!

I am not impressed with the last 5 years of product output (or lack of output) of the efforts of a company with over 100,000 employees. A company that has not shown the innovation it has promised us. A company who's products are slipping from Best In Class.

A new snake oil salesman would be very good for Apple.

Good grief, the last thing Apple's UI design group needs is another graphic designer to help things look pretty when you are just looking at it (ie, not actually using and interacting with it.). How about a few usability and functionality experts who aren't going to obscure the power of Apple's software behind a bunch of makeup.

You do know that not all of Apple's employees are industrial designers, right?

If you rely on a media creative director for industrial design, then you are really desperate...

Another high priced "talent".  Where are the results for all this talent they have hired over the last few years.  That's right, they do have a new book out.  Apple is like the New York Yankees.  The highest payroll yet they are in last place.

Wow this iKnockoff user  posted an opinion piece that's reprinted every year as proof that Apple is doomed! The end is coming guys!

Apple taking %99 profits is not enough!!

All Apple stores will close tomorrow!

Good for him. I was a long term subscriber to WIRED - like 10 years. But dropped it when they became far too "GQ for wanna-be nerds". The long form articles were good, but all the "new tech" puff pieces were months or weeks out of date by the time they appeared in print.

    I sure do.

A long time ago, perhaps too long; Apple was an open company that would keenly listen to ideas from low level employees.

I'm sure those bright kids who work in Apple Stores have all background, hands on knowledge, and potential new ideas that this company needs.

Instead of this crazy idea that all Apple innovation needs to come from our resident mastermind locked up in an ultra secure, clandestine location deep in the heart of our spaceship. I'm certain there are 999,999 others already on the payroll that can provide bonafide solid ideas and imput.

The kind of story even a bad AI would dismiss.

Terrible article. Looks like someone got paid to piss on Apple. So slanted and misinformed in surprised it was taken at face value.

You wanna tap retail employees for "imput" on innovative product development?
