I wonder if HTC will see the same whining Apple did? Its only a matter of time before most if not all of the popular smartphones follow Apple's lead with this.
It is not in Apple hands, but in hands of headphone manufactirers. So far Apple earphones earpads are fashionable crap with no sound quality... welll at least comparable to high end headphones some of us use. Also explain to me why I would need to run and charge ther parts of equipment while I could do only one? WHo is going to replace batteries in headphones and why one would need that service? We are not there with technology yet. Smarter and long lived energy storage solutions need to be developed.
The arguments about wires being a thing of the past would hold more water if Apple itself hadn't included the jack on its latest two new macs.
The argument about waterproofing would hold more water (excuse the pun) if Samsung didn't have a water resistant phone with a headphone jack.
The argument about sales not being impacted would hold more water if sales of the iPhone 7 had been officially reported.
The argument that you're correct because of the deafening silence on this board would hold more water if it weren't the middle of a work day.

It's interesting to see the level of smugness based on the actions of an unprofitable, also-ran Android phone manufacturer.

For my part, BT is laggy as hell and I don't want another device to keep charged.  I think it was eliminated solely to fit the taptic engine; which, if given a choice, I would not have picked over the convenience of the jack.

It will be interesting to see Apple's level of commitment to this when the next iPod arrives.

    A couple of points:

There is a difference between 'water resistant' and 'water proof'. While the Samsung phone claimed that the phone was water proof for a limited time, independent tests indicated that this was not true.

    http://www.fudzilla.com/news/mobile/41087-waterproof-samsung-isn-t

However, if Consumer Reports carried out the tests, then it's possible they were using acid instead of water and forgot to mention it.

Secondly, Apple has not updated the iPod line for quite some time, so leaving the headphone jack in place does not prove anything one way or the other (and I suspect you know that).

Apple said that the jack takes up too much room on the phone that they could use for something else; there isn't such an issue with space on the Macs so there's no need to dump the headphone jack. Besides which, many professional musicians have headphones that would stop working, so that would be a non-starter. Personally, I think that they should have added a lightning port to the Macbook, but I guess that's going too at some point (possibly sooner than we think if they get true wireless charging to work).

I'm sure someone will complain—after all, we live in a world where people want Obamacare to be repealed because they have ACA instead—but their low marketshare and lower mindshare with smartphones means that it'll have the thunderous effect of a beetle's fart in the Grand Canyon.

That said, there is a clear benefit to what everyone but Apple will probably do. That is, move to USB-C. So long as wired headphones are using the same port interface it's not an issue. I wanted Apple to go this route years ago, but they did it the same year that the W1-chip and AirPods were released, and BT headphones took more half the revenue of the headphone market. That's only a reported 17% of the unit sales for the article from 8 months ago, but that will surely have increased since then and will continue to increase.
Well, it's certainly not going to decrease. I guess this is what they mean by skating to where the puck is. Trouble is that many of the older users don't like skates; they'd prefer to tip-toe across the ice in their bed socks.

Dumb ass tech media proven wrong again.

but, but, but, but, i need an analog head phone jack...just as stupid as requiring a CD player in a new car
You reminded me on that. I haven't used my CD player for 3-4 years now.

It is awfully quiet here...where are the dozens of posters that said the iPhone 7 abandoning analog audio out was the stupidest decision ever?
I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm still here. Maybe I don't count, though, because I don't think I ever said it was the stupidest decision ever. I said *I* don't like the decision because I didn't get enough back in the trade to make it worth giving up the benefits and convenience it offered.

The fact that another manufacturer is shouting "ME TOO!" does nothing to make me feel better about Apple's choice. Especially since I'm likely to want another iPhone at some point, whereas I'm not as likely to buy an HTC so am less concerned about what they do.

Perhaps you can explain how you perceive HTC's actions as a vindication of Apple's decision? Or were you just trying to stir up shit, and I bit?
The primary point I was making is the double standard of (certain) forum posters, and the media-blog-o-sphere in general, where Apple was raked over the coals in commentary and reviews for removing the port.  Yet when HTC does it, there is nary a whimper.  I knew there wouldn't be, just pointing it out...so in that regards, I indeed was just stirring things up a bit:)

I don't really think HTC's move validates Apple's position. I am sure Apple had this road mapped out for a couple of years now.  It was going to be removed at some point, and so they planned for when they felt it was best.

To each there own, but to me it was a fine tradeoff.  For phone calls and general use I use the included EarPods.  I have Sony over-ear cans with noise cancellation, and can use either the adapter, or buy a new cord (my headphones have a removable cord & are always stored that way, so only takes an inexpensive 3.5mm & Lightning cord to not require the adapter).  I just received the AirPods for Christmas, and am loving them.  The battery on my iPhone  7 is so much better that I have never had to charge the phone during day, so no issue with not being able to charge & listen at same time.

In return, we got much better water & dust resistance (given a few months since launch and not having a "gate", I would say Apple did much better than Samsung in their waterproofing, so perhaps this was a better path).  If the space also allowed better Taptic engine and stereo speakers, I also say it was a good tradeoff.

To each their own of course, but it worked for me.
