The mini is an excellent reading device. Right now it is no no man's land though: Too big for a phablet. Too small for being a PC replacement.

It looks like Apple is at crossroads here. They have to make up their mind of what to do with the mini. Unless they decide to shrink the 9.7 inch iPad with an edge to edge display? I'd be fine with that, as long as Apple gives me the option to add the frame digitally: I for one love to have a border around my screen content. I actually prefer a silver border, not the default black one. It would make the screen smaller to display content, but I'd get better focus instead.

The day Apple dumps the Mini is the day I am done with Apple. I am still miffed they got rid of the iPod Classic nearly as soon as they perfected it.

I'm an architect and have noted the Apple advertising of the 12.9 iPad as suitable for our profession. Having spent time in store testing it out I think it's too big, whereas the 9.7 feel too small. A 10.5 would be just right.

I think the increase in screen size is afforded with the rumor that Home button is going away.
