Carpool Karaoke trailer pops up during Grammy awards, debut still not yet set

Apple Music's "Carpool Karaoke" series now has a trailer, featuring a first wave of stars including James Corden, Will Smith, Metallica, Chelsea Handler, Blake Shelton, Shaquille O'Neal, John Legend, John Cena, and Ariana Grande, amongst others.

The trailer debuted during the Grammy Awards on Sunday night. Instead of Corden performing all of the hosting duties as he does on the segment seen during The Late Late Show With James Corden, the show will make unlikely pairings, such as the aforementioned Metallica pairing up with comedian and game show host Billy Eichner, or wrestler John Cena with cager Shaquile O'Neal.

"We love music, and Carpool Karaoke celebrates it in a fun and unique way that is a hit with audiences of all ages," said Apple's head of software and services Eddy Cue said when news of the spinoff emerged. "It's a perfect fit for Apple Music."

It is still not yet known when the series will start.

Carpool Karaoke reiterates a sketch that Corden performed for charity in 2011 on British television with George Michael. Corden's episode with singer Adele has garnered nearly 148 million views, and the segment released last July with First Lady Michelle Obama has collected over 52 million views. Other artists who have appeared on the show include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Elton John, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Lin-Manuel Miranda from Broadway musical Hamilton, and Gwen Stefani.

Apple CEO Tim Cook appeared on a brief segment of the show, which played before the iPhone 7 announcement in September.

Looks great, different and includes original artists and other celebrities. It will be very popular and great for the AppleTV platform. Where else will you find artists and celebs singing like this? Totally Rocks!

Sadly they aren't sticking to the car and are letting a bigger budget make them lose focus. Anyway...

This is part of Apple Music and will create a much larger audience than just for the AppleTV.

If they just stayed in the car forever the whole thing would get pretty boring after a few episodes. Getting out and doing karaoke with surprises (which is a big part of the fun in the car) can allow them to keep it fresh and add some more comedic aspects to the show.
