New Apple Clips app aimed at social media video capture, quick editing

As part of the Tuesday reveals, Apple has unveiled a new Clips app, designed to allow iPhone users to create and edit videos with automatic transcription and easily share them to other third party apps and services.




The Clips app is a more complex video capture application than the existing capture mechanism in Photos, allowing users to capture a video live, and apply video filters, overlays, and Posters. The Clips app isn't a replacement for more "professional" video editing tools, and appears to be aimed at social media publication, and quick and easy video sharing with existing contacts.

A timeline feature allows for stringing together a sequence of up to 30 minute videos easily, to a maximum of 60 minutes. Posters are basically title pages or video separators, and are full screen text-based images insertable anywhere in the video.

The Live Titles feature records a user's voice, while the app automatically translates it into text in one of 36 languages. Live Titles can have several filters as well, including comic book filters, speech bubbles, shapes and full-screen animated posters.

Live Titles annotations can be added either during recording or afterwards, and are "perfectly synced" with the user's voice, according to Apple.

Smart Suggestions provides the user guidelines on who the app thinks might want to see the video, based on facial recognition data garnered from Photos. Videos made with Clips can be shared directly to popular social networks and video websites, including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Vimeo.

Clips will be available on the App Store for free beginning in April, and is compatible with iPhone 5s and later, the new 9.7-inch iPad, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, iPad mini 2 and later, and iPod touch 6th generation.?

Devices must be running the as-yet unreleased iOS 10.3.

Also revealed by Apple on Tuesday are a new 9.7-inch iPad, a special edition (Product)Red iPhone 7, and the doubling of storage on the iPhone SE without changing the price of the device.

    I think I might throw my iPhone in the trash and call Ma Bell for a rotary dial land line soon.  ;)

    This app is the kind of thing Apple normally would want to show off during an event, if they were having one.

    The new iPad replacing the Air 2 is also something that would undoubtedly have been shown as rounding out the lineup when new iPad Pros were introduced at an event, if they were having one.

    Seems to me like they are not having one. At least not this quarter. Perhaps the September event will be another "all products on deck" event like 2015 was.

    Smart to announce these through press releases. It avoids the "non-event" event criticisms.

    Apple is going all in with 64-bit with this app. Bravo! I am looking forward to installing the app.

    If People (faces) are not synced between iDevices and the Cloud Photo Library (for whatever reason I still don't understand) and you cannot even save it with an iTunes backup, I wonder where the names of people are going to be taken since tagging them is so far a huge waste of time....you can only do on a since iDevice.

    EDIT: Just checked the Apple website and realised it is "Coming Soon".
