    If all things are equal

    All thinygs are not equal!

But it's unknown how unequal they are.
And you think that gives you the right to then assume that they are equal then claim that revenue must equal profit? How the hell do you not see your logic fallacy?
At least my logic is based on actual numbers that are known, not unlike science that makes conclusions based on what is known and then proven or changed when more is known. The OP made an absolute statement based purely on emotions, and assumptions, so Mr. I Question Everything, why didn't you challenge him on his statement? Because you agree with it without knowing the facts.
    1) I don't read every comment, especially on long threads, which is a reason why something incorrect may not have stuck out.

    2) I did go back to read the original statement, according to quoted text in one of your recent replies, before you chimed in. There were three statements in three posts by at least 2 people that used the terms: apparently, expected to, and probably never. Each of those came from different comments. I could ask what source "expected to" orginated from, but I read nothing stated in the direct and axiomatically incorrect way you did you claim, "Since everything is equal on the app markets the one that makes the most revenue makes the most profit."

BTW, writing "since everything is equal" is not the same as, "If all things are equal." Ceteris paribus is useful for deduction, but usually trying to remove variables to make something more easily digestible. Even if we move the goal posts to "if" I still haven't seen an argument that would make the statement "revenue equals profits" viable..

Humor me on this please, for arguments sake let's say that it costs Apple and Google the same amount of money to run their app stores. Their app business models are aligned, so you make and sell an app for both, and both keep 30%. A dev makes an app for both that they sell for $1, and let's say that the apps sells 5000 copies on the Play Store and 4500 on the App Store. Who made the most profit? Google simply because they made the most revenue.

It's very different from the hardware business model. I can get iOS on a Android device, nor can I get Android on a iPhone, but I can pay $.99 for Angry Birds on a $250 Android device or a $650 iPhone. Google and Apple both made the same amount of money off me.

We do know that all things aren't equal, that is are many factors involved, and it's improbable that Apple comes on on top on each and every one of those factors, so at best we can make an educated guess with what we do know. Which is all I did, and I misspoke when I made my absolute comment.

You lost me a bit with that one. How are you reaching your numbers to be so sure of your calculations?

Do you know how much profit the Chinese Android App Stores make for example?
I was simply stating what has been expected and has not been expected in terms of revenues and profits. The same ones reporting Android store revenues are set to take over App Store revenues haven't said they expect the App Store profits to be taken over.

However, based on how the app industry is understood, the understanding of app developers, and myself being an app developer, the App Store is known to profit more. Which is why most developers are more concerned about their apps success on the App Store compared to Android stores, as it means more money for themselves.

Again, I was only stating expectations and there were no expections, from anyone in the industry, that Android stores were going to surpass the App Store in profit any time soon.
Profit more for whom? Apple or the dev? Apple profits from every app sold but doesn't mean that the dev profited.

How about I try to get through your ignorance from a different angle.

Let's say that we're both App Store developers. We each have 10,000 downloads in a given timeframe. Now, I build an app myself with minimal overhead and charge $10 per app. You have excessive overhead with your app, yet, according to your, as you put it, "scientifically sound logic" we're each making the same amount of profit because our revenues are the same.

Or, you give your app away trying to establish yourself and you sell 1,000,000 in the time frame I can sell 10,000 copies at $10 a pop. My revenue is $70k, minus a variety of expenses, while you've actually lost money during that same timeframe despite claiming how popular your free app is and how we're each getting 70% from Apple.

I understand this is hard for you but this is about as simple as it gets for everyone else.

    REVENUE ≠ PROFITS

I never said revenue equaled profits as an absolute statement. If 2 entities have the same profit margin, then whomever made the most revenue made the most profit because they are directly correlated to one another.

For instance, on the whole Android manufacturers make more revenue than Apple does on the sale of smartphones but profit less because they are operating on a little to none profit margin whereas Apple has a healthy profit margin, on that I will not and cannot argue because we see the numbers on a regular basis.

On the app front there are only a few players, and the playing field is much more even, and the profit margins are going to be closer than on they are on the hardware front, so there is no clear cut profit winner without knowing all the variables.

I found where the OP replied to a comment questioning his reasoning, and he jumped from Apple's profits to the dev's profits, which are not one and the same. There are going to be devs that profit more from iOS while others will profit more from Android.

A free app isn't sold, now is it? Revenue is only generated when something is paid for. Free apps actually cost Apple and Google money, they are not part of revenue.

I never said revenue equaled profits as an absolute statement.
    You absolutely did write that:
Since everything is equal on the app markets the one that makes the most revenue makes the most profit.

You also wrote—which blows my fucking mind:
I didn't know apps could be sold at a loss.

You're missing the point where everything had to be equal or very close to it. The only time more revenue would mean more profit is if the costs are the similar or the same for both.

Instead of going with 2 devs, let's go with one that made an app for both iOS and Android. It cost him the same to make said app for both but sells more on Android. The dev's profit is going to be higher with Android simply because his revenue was higher.
