This was a featured I had on my Motorola Atrix back in 2009 it only took apple 8 yrs to figure this out. I used this feature on my Atrix all the time, it was nice feature since it let people know you were driving and they usually stop send you texts since they did not want to bother you.
Did your Motorola do NFC payments, home automation, or document scanning? priorities.
I've come to enjoy this feature in Beat. Never realized how often I picked up my phone in the car and this is breaking me from a very bad habit.
Yes I agree with you on this point, I like how it puts a barrier for me and every time I see that purple notification I put my phone back down. Although, iOS 11 seems to not let me use my phone even when at stop lights, is it because it's plugged into my cars usb connector?

Depends on where you live, but here, it's technically illegal to fiddle with your phone, etc. even when stopped at a stoplight. (Yea, I know... common sense has left the building.)
I forgot about this feature and happened to notice my Watch was in DND mode. At first I thought I did that, but then I got in my car again and noticed my Watch was in DND mode again so I picked up my phone and saw that it was muting everything while driving (Said on the screen). I've left this feature enabled and I agree with others, its amazing how much you used to pick up your phone while driving. Something simple like this I think can save a lot of lives as long as its left enabled.

The other features are not really relevant. The point is the concept and the technology to implement it have been around for years. Apple just hasn't added the feature until now for whatever reason.
Distractions in driving seem to be getting worse. Touch screens in cars are not automatically a bad idea - the key issue is how the interface is designed, and that is where Apple excells. Car Play, even with its bugs and quirks, is head and shoulders above most of the other interfaces I've seen. (Ford, Toyota - are you listening???) Nothing fixes stupid, but the DND feature is a nice tool for people who can't ignore their phone.
Enabling this feature should result in the automatic suspension of your license. If you need a computer to nanny you, you lack the judgement necessary to operate a car.

No doubt. The troubling thing is that we (as a society) should need such a feature in the first place.
