Two notable puzzle-oriented games have become available to download from the iOS App Store today, with 'Full Throttle Remastered' bringing a classic adventure game up to date, while 'Layton's Mystery Journey' lands on iPhone and iPad months before the Nintendo 3DS edition goes on sale.

The remake of classic point-and-click adventure game "Full Throttle Remastered" has arrived on iOS, a few months after shipping on consoles and Mac. The Lucasfilm game, originally released by LucasArts in 1995, has been updated for a modern audience by Double Fine Productions, with the gameplay kept intact alongside upgraded graphics and new audio.

"Full Throttle" follows Ben Throttle, the leader of the Polecats biker gang, who finds himself caught up in a story featuring motorcycles, mayhem, and murder. After the Polecats are duped into escorting the CEO of a motorcycle manufacturer into an ambush, resulting in the gang being framed for murder, Throttle must work to free his comrades and bring the perpetrators to justice.

In the remastered release, players will be able to switch between the original visuals and sound of the game and the updated version whenever they want. All new hand-drawn and 3D artwork has been created for the game, with bonus features including a creator's commentary and concept art browser also added.

Requiring iOS 9.0 or later and taking up 3.9GB of space, "Full Throttle Remastered" is available to purchase from the iOS App Store for $4.99. The Mac version of the game is priced at $14.99.

The latest chapter in the "Professor Layton" game series has made its way to iOS devices ahead of a release on Nintendo's previous-generation handheld game console. "Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire's Conspiracy" has been released by publisher and developer Level 5 in the App Store for iPhone and iPad, but will also land on the Nintendo 3DS in the fall.

"Layton's Mystery Journey" marks the tenth anniversary of the Layton franchise, changing out the Professor for his daughter, Katrielle. Visiting the famous landmarks of London and searching for her missing father, Kat must discover clues to his whereabouts while also solving 12 cases, and completing a large number of logic puzzles.

To extend gameplay past the base game, Level 5 is making additional daily puzzles available to download, with extra puzzle sets offered as in-app purchases. Players are also given the option to customize the costumes of characters and redecorate rooms, though again some items are part of in-app purchases.

"Layton's Mystery Journey" requires iOS 9.0 or later, takes up 1.14GB of storage, and is priced at $15.99.

“I’m not putting my lips on that.”

I’m going to have to download this now. Full Throttle was a great game, and arguably the best implementation of the SCUMM interface. The only problem is I know how it ends.

I wasn’t aware of this history at all.

The only SCUMM game I'd put ahead of this was Day of the Tentacle - shear brilliance of 90s gaming (and with the voice work of Richard Sanders AKA Les Nessman - also remastered & released by Double Fine). This (Full Throttle) has a superior soundtrack and Mark Hamill doing some voice work as well as some arcade-style gaming thrown in with the adventure theme. A fantastic game and well worth the CAD$6.99 price tag. Definitely downloading this without question.

Now I'm holding out for the old Space Quest and Leisure Suit Larry series...

Leisure Suit Larry might run into issues with the content restrictions on the App Store.

One of the cool things about Day of the Tentacle was that there was a full emulator for the original Maniac Mansion hidden in there. Personally, in terms of story, I'd put this one ahead, although there are a lot of good gags in DotT.

My other favourite is Sam & Max Hit the Road, which is also the other contender for best version of SCUMM. There is some truly bad art in there, though. And some equally brilliant art, including the chillingly realistic VR sequence that is better than most systems on the market today...

I loved playing Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards on a PC-AT!

I remember finding another Larry game that had this huge warning telling us that it was a "clean" game!!
