I'm sure Jonny is dying a little on the inside accepting the limitations of the hardware dipping into software territory.

So, he'd sooner commit seppuku than sign his name this proposed (cough Android UI) - sorry Max.

Actually Jonny Ives has said a number of times that his goal is to fuse together the software and hardware into a single seamless design. I can't think of a better example of that than this new status bar - hardware feature combo.

It's a done deal. Here's the top of the same screen on iOS 11. Note how Apple increased the size of the title and moved it down, and just how much space is now devoted to the back/apps and All Categories buttons.

Those are going to get moved down and the nav space reclaimed.

Damn you nailed it. There's really no other good reason for the huge shift in nav bar title design. I can't wait!

    Apple designs are timeless...

I'm sorry, but there's no way that guy is Lando Calrissian.
    Why not?

I really wish Apple would replace that caret with a proper arrow. Always hated it. And with iOS 11 in some places (like the App Store) they added shading around words to make it look like a button but when you turn on button shapes it doesn’t create a button it underlines words ala html. John Gruber called it “gross”. Where is the consistency? If Apple thinks they need to bring buttons back then they should all be the same. I would argue make them look like the “GET” button in the App Store.

I know it is just a rendering and Apple will do much better, but that first render looks like a generic Android junk phone.

Have you ever thought it's designed that way for "dark mode" when Apple releases that mode for iPhone after launching iPhone 8.
