I'll take it over no Touch ID. Hopefully just a stop gap until they can go under screen next year or the year after.

This may be the most mysterious release of the iPhone in years! No one knows for sure what Apple will show in September / October.
I've been trying to tell people but nobody will listen - Black Mesa, the codename, was a secure facility in the 1997 video game Half-Life. one of the well-known things about the game is that to access secure areas, Retinal scanners were used. and they were everywhere. Retinal scanners. Retinal. scanners. Retina display? retinal scanner. that's how to secure FaceID: it can see your retinas, even from the tabletop.

You heard it here first, the new iPhone will have a retinal scanner.

What a total ergonomic and embarassing fail. It would be better, and I mean orders of magnitude better, to keep the chin and Touch ID on the front if they couldn't do it reliably under the screen.
Agreed, but remember that it's a rumor. That said, I would no longer put such stupidity past Apple if they decided they needed the entire front for the screen. It's the kind of thing that happens if you prioritize sales and marketing over UX.

Going to bet we don’t see this. Those who rock a case?—most people. Nope.
Many people use cases on android phones and have no problem using a fingerprint scanner on the rear of the phone. Not sure why you feel this would disqualify it. I’m not sure about the rumor but a case definitely would not be an issue. Heck many iPhone cases already have cutouts to show off the Apple logo
Then why the hell iOS still offers 5 finger print storage while only 1 or 2 can be used: either left or right index
This.  I was reading through the comments to see if anyone would bring this up.  Do Android phones that have the sensor on the rear offer the user the ability to register more than two fingers?  If so, how does that make sense, unless it's a carry-over from previous models of the same phone that had the sensor on the front?  I just think this would be an embarrassment for Apple, to go from touting registration of multiple fingers, with the obvious defaults being the user's left and right thumbs, to a position on the back of the handset where the thumbs makes no sense at all.  This isn't Apple removing a 100 year old audio jack that's outdated; this is a true step backwards, and Apple won't do it.

Ive used an S8 with the rear sensor. It's crap from a user perspective.  The only way this would be acceptable in an Apple product, which, by the way, in addition to its lack of ergonomics, is the lame me too-ness of it, is that the facial recognition is sooo damn good the Touch ID is relegated to only be used for servicing purposes.
There is a big difference. S8 fingerprint sensor at the back is exactly next to camera lens. Not saying anything about Apple, but if they did rear touch ID, it wouldn't give the same problem as S8.

I also intrigued by the authenticity of this video. What do the code "Black Mesa" and "Sydney" means?

10 seconds to perform this function. One worker could churn out maybe 2900 a day. I'm not used to these scales but it seems like it's going to take a lot of workers to meet Apple level demands.

He is clearly not touching the Apple logo. And there seems to be a normal Touch ID sensor beneath the logo.

It looks fake. So what if he touches the logo and a bunch of text appears on a monitor? Wanna see a magic trick? Pull my finger.  ;)

Damn! I thought you were going to say that the new iPhone will have a teleportation device to Xen...

Cases for existing iPhones generally have a cutout on the back to display the all-important Apple logo. Why would case makers not continue this trend especially if the 10th anniversary model has Touch ID on the back??
Well mine doesn't. And even if it did I'm not removing my credit card from the holder on the back just to swipe TouchID!

    Horrible idea IMHO...

... in one handed use, just like you can only use your left thumb or right thumb in one handed use with the front mounted TouchID.

also, who says the stored prints can only be for one user? If I want to let my son access my phone but still keep it secure, I can add his finger print as one of the five.

You’re nowhere near being the first to suggest this.

What do you say only left or right index can be used?
I have multiple fingers from each hand registered, which is helpful in case you have peanut butter or something on a finger or it one hand is wet etc.

Android garbage is not a shining example of anything.

People that buy Android in the first place don't know any better. What they do/not have "have a problem with" is of no interest to me, and is not a worthy comparison to anything Apple is or is not doing.

Folks, I looked at this video again, besides the fact that apple would not use something other than a Mac to test their products, how do you test the Touch ID without some physical connection between the phone and the test system. They are not doing it wirelessly, thinks about all the set up that will need to occur to get that to happen specially in the test system, plus why put on it on tray that move in and out. There is no Lightning connectors on the tester nor is there any sort of bed or nails or pogo pins to connect to some sort of test point on the phone.

Stop being gullible, I am not say this is not what apple is up to, but this video is pure fake, please use some critical thinking when you look at this stuff.

That '100 year old audio jack' is on just about every piece of audio equipment except for the iPhone, including pro equipment. My car has 100+ year old round black things on it too. Similar to the audio jack... maybe Apple is just being courageous by removing that legacy fingerprint sensor on a front button, and giving us the 'new improved' back button... so they can expand the screen. I'm sure they'll spin it with some high-drama event at the keynote.

I have multiple fingers from each hand registered, which is helpful in case you have peanut butter or something on a finger or it one hand is wet etc.
You can also register the same finger in multiple profiles to increase the recognition.

Yea, you're probably right. I'm responding to Apple doing it in theory, but it is important to remember that's what we're reacting to, and not something Apple has actually done.
