randominternetperson said: Also "iPhone Anniversary" sounds like Anniversary is the noun.
It matches “Apple Watch Edition.”
Two wrongs don't make a right. :-)
And Apple dropped the "Edition" model didn't they? (Probably not because of the awkward name, but I can pretend).
Edit/Correction: I see that they only dropped the $10,000 version. Now there is a $1250 ceramic Apple Watch Edition. Ugh, such a terrible name. "Hey nice watch, what is it?" "It's the new Apple Watch Edition?" "Oh yeah, what's that version called?" "Apple Watch Edition, like I said." "Huh."
What if, during the big anticipated gathering to announce the partnership with the AR company in Austin, Tim simply said: "Apple purchases companies from time to time, but generally does not discuss future product plans," drops the mic, and gets back on the Apple-owned jet?
"What exactly Cook plans to unveil is unclear," AppleInsider staff: Get out of the perpetual bad habit of using the word 'unclear'. Where you have zero information on something, the word to be used is 'unknown', not 'unclear'. What exactly Cook plans to unveil is unknown.
It's clearly not clear, but it is known to be unknown.

It probably is known by at least a couple folks there in Austin, but those that do clearly aint' sayin'.
EDIT: If the announcement is is simply about the Swift training separately reported earlier this morning and with the Austin Community College getting a specific call-out, it will be a bit of a letdown.
It would be odd for Tim Cook to make any product announcments or reveal the dates for future product announcements, so I'm not expecting any of that. A training center would be cool, maybe they're going to expand their footprint in the area.
announcing an announcement wouldn't be that weird. its the right timing for it. but for it to be the only reason for the trip would be weird. If he went for some other reason and it happened to be mentioned at the same time, while invites also went out, it would be different but not too odd
though it appears its moot cause it seems the discussion was just about Apple's education programs, especially Swift

So all this was really just about the Swift Curriculum? If there's any evidence needed for the mind-share Apple commands this would be it. The rumor that someone at Apple sneezed is nearly enough to get a breaking news tag on some tech blogs.

How can it be a letdown when 2 hours ago we didn't even know there was going to be an announcement? I watched most of the Iowa event yesterday and it was boilerplate political puffery to stroke the egos of the governor and mayor and to remind people that Apple is responsible for lots of US jobs. Yawn. But that's fine; it's not like Apple.com said "tune in for live coverage of a big announcement." Expect absolutely nothing from this event today and you'll probably have those expectations met.

@randominternetperson The story here about Tim Cook personally traveling to Austin for an "important announcement" was written yesterday, not two hours ago, and that it could well be with regard to Apple's AR/VR plans and developers. So yeah more was expected by many here. If you had read the article connected to this discussion you decided to join you would know that. Just look at the very first line.
Heck I'll even quote it for you: "...Apple CEO Tim Cook is planning to make an important announcement in the augmented reality/virtual reality space in Austin, Tex., on Friday, and might also reveal the date of an expected September iPhone event..."
Still possible of course that more might be announced before the day is over, but if not it's a letdown for many here who were expecting something else IMO.
Terrible timing for a flight into Austin, given the hurricane hitting the coast.
Austin’s far enough inland to avoid rough weather from this hurricane / tropical storm. They’ll be fortunate to get decent rain.
Some forecasts are showing up to 10" of rain for Austin and almost 22" just 60 miles southeast of Austin. The lakes are far above average capacity, aquifers are in good shape, and the ground is already reasonably saturated. 2" of rain would be fine. We are probably going to experience a good deal of flooding.
Not to mention all the people evacuating to Austin.

Thanks for the correction about the timing. I personally didn't see the article until this morning, but you're right it was posted last night. Also thanks for quoting the "is planning to make an important announcement" part. I forgot about that since I discounted it as complete BS. Truly important announcements from Apple are telegraphed days in advance and aren't made on Friday afternoons.

Tim Cook may have put Apple expansion on hold here in Texas. The Texas Legislature recently debated a bathroom bill similar to South Carolina's. The bill didn't pass, but it's not dead yet either.
