hmm.... I have a 6-plus that I use with one hand and NEVER use "reachability" or have any problems... (and no, I don't imagine my hands are any larger than average.)

The iPhone 6/7 doesn't support reachability – only the iPhone 6/7 Plus.  The iPhone X has a larger screen, but is roughly the same size of iPhone 6/7.  Also, you don't have a home button to double tap to use it so...
    I have a 6s 4.7" and I use reachability all the time

In a video posted by a prolific forum member I saw that all Home gestures were being performed with the other hand, not by the hand holding the iPhone X. That upset me, because I had hopes that I could live with the lack of Home button. I can live somehow, but I'm afraid the walking by street customers will feel very clumsy in trying those new gestures in an Apple Store. Add to this the image they will make of Face ID, in which their iPhone is unlocked by a simple photo of themselves... Any sales personnel talking to them about depth perception, 3D, IR and alike is guaranteed to lose the sale at that moment...

Fortunately there is the 8 series...

as a one-hand user, aiming for the iPhone X, I will be leaving daily feedback to Apple, to add a gesture for reachability under OS11. ….literally, Daily!
No, not literally. Eventually you’ll stop after it gets tiring.

There are people with different hand sizes and usage habits. So if one person here states reachability is a non issue for him, that’s fine, but it doesn’t say anything about the overall usefulness of the feature.
I would advise that Apple should listen carefully to users of the iPhone X to determine if such a feature should be implemented in a future version of this kind of phone. And they should do this too regarding the way control center is invoked. For me, it sucks. But again, that’s only me.

I use "reachability" almost daily on my 6S, but I'm one of those that pine for a top spec 4"er

You don't know a thing about what you're saying. Of course the iPhone 6 and 7 support reachability. NOT just the Plus models, as you falsely said above. Don't spread misinformation. Try educating yourself instead.

We use Reachability dozens of times per day. It's really a shame that Apple is abandoning this.

Turns out I don’t like the new Control Center either.

Using Reachability on a Plus-sized iPhone running the golden master of iOS 11, users cannot swipe down from the top of the display to invoke Notification Center”

I installed the publicly released version of iOS 11 today and I can bring down the Notification Center while reachability is invoked, by swiping down from the top of the display as always.
