Rumor: AirPods Wireless Charging Case coming in December for $69

The AirPods Wireless Charging Case teased during Apple's Sept. 12 iPhone event is rumored to arrive in December, at a cost of $69, a report out of Europe alleges.




The information comes direct from Apple Switzerland, MacPrime claimed on Thursday. Apple's worldwide marketing head, Phil Schiller, said little about the product beyond its name on Sept. 12, though it was on display for the press.

$69 is the same amount the company charges to replace a lost wired case. The Wireless Charging Case won't ship by default with AirPods, however, at least not any in the foreseeable future.

The optional AirPods accessory should theoretically support any Qi-compatible wireless charger.

Apple is also preparing its own dock known as the AirPower, which will be able to charge multiple devices simultaneously, including the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and Apple Watch Series 3. It's not expected to ship until 2018 though, meaning that many people buying an AirPods Wireless Charging Case would have to rely on third-party power from the likes of Belkin and Mophie.

AirPods production has only recently begun catching up with demand, and even now it may still take two weeks or more for an order to ship from Apple.

    Does it work with existing AirPods? Is the AirPods accessory the charging device or a separate device to make it compatible?

    It's a new case - you can either continue to use your existing case to charge your AirPods and charge that case via Lightning...or you can buy a new 2nd gen case to charge your AirPods and charge THAT case via Lightning OR the AirPower mat...or any other Qi charging platform.

    It seems like you'll just dock your AirPods into this case then throw it on the mat for charging, so yes it should work w/ existing AirPods. Though what one would do w/ the old case is beyond me. [EDIT: NINJAed!]

    So was there any change at all to the AirPods themselves this year? It's just the case that's new.

    Sog35, you are correct.  He's ignorant.  The study he sites is related to GSM and CDMA radio frequencies, not Bluetooth.  Page 5
