Wasn't the Apple MFi program supposed to be a money grab by Apple for licensing fees? I recall that narrative from forum discussions years ago led by Apple critics.
Yep, and now that Google is doing it is suddenly okay and beneficial to customers. Gotta love the critics walking around with a permanent coating of egg on their faces.
I hadn't read that Google was rumored to be charging licensing fees to be part of the rumored "Made for Google" program but you could be right.
I read the OP’s post... I do recall reading reading comments from people saying the MFI program was just a money grab for Apple. These comments came from Google fans that were proud to buy cables and accessories from Ebay on the cheap. As if there was no other criteria for the MFI program. So whether Google takes or charges licensing fees was really not the point.

FWIW I personally have no issue with an accessory certification program whether it's from Apple, Google, Ford, Nikon, Intel or whoever. Typically, the Devil would be in the details.
Can't wait for MfG to be out for a year and when Apple mentions it at their DevCon in 2019 all the Fandroids will claim Apple once again copying everyone else.
The Google Pixel was a massive failure at only 1 million units sold.
How is MfG (stupid acronym - I see it and think “manufacturing”) going to convince accessory makers to tool up and produce products for a device that sells in such small quantities?
They need to start selling in significant quantities first.

And this even older MFi thread here at AI which includes (more than) a few questions about the way it is structured and the motivation behind it?:

I think not. Selective memory...

Next they will open Google Stores in the malls -- right across from the Microsoft stores
