I wish they had password protected shut down. My iPhone 5 was stolen years ago by a guy who just immediately powered it off so I couldn’t track him. If the iPhone had password protected shut down I would have nailed him before he left the area because I could track him with my wife’s phone.
Yes!  Or erased and locked the phone.   Once he turned it off, Apple's whole "Find my phone" app was rendered impotent.

How evolutionary.. :p what's the point of shutting down from there? just add assestive touch, add a lock screen shortcut there and long press it. It will prompt you to shutdown too. OH btw if power button is working, then there is no point of doing that, but if it's not working, how will we turn it on?

    1) You can't think of a single scenario where someone could be in Settings and ten want to turnoff the device without using a button, but you can conceive of a scenario where they'd want to do this but instead go into Assistive Touch to enable a feature for one-time use because a physical button isn't working properly?

    2) Once you plug in your iDevice into a power source it will turn on. You can turn it off once it's charging and it will continue to charge, but if you remove and replace the power supply it will turn on again.

If there are increasingly effective methods of preventing the iPhone from being used by thieves, they'll either give up on iPhones or they'll use violence to force owners to disable these protections before they leave. I'd rather people lost the phone than their life.

Alternately, it would be nice if one could give a robber a "dummy password" which would have the appearance of unlocking, but would instead be alerting the police.

Submit that to Apple. They usually listen to good ideas.

As stated in the comments already, it's been submitted by me long ago… and I'm sure I wasn't even close to the first to suggest it. Just assume it's never going to happen.

So you shut down your phone using software because the sleep/wake button is defective... how do you turn it back on? Doesn't seem like a particularly useful feature at all

Connect the iPhone to a power outlet/ iTunes and the iPhone turns on.

I am sure every iPhone users had similar power button failure problem one or other time.
I must be one in hundreds of millions then.
Honestly, or are you covering for Apple a little here? Have you really never experienced a problem with a Home button? We've had two and we've only ever owned six iPhones. Maybe you don't use yours as much or keep it as long as we do.
