You can pre-order for March delivery from Amazon.com.

Cost? $4950. That's not too bad for the first generation of a new device. Remember what desktop computers cost 10 years ago? (You weren't born yet? - forgot). Go here:

Oh good, another device to keep our obese population from actually having to walk across the street. Or for that matter the room.

Now I can have inattentive, cell-phone chatting, latte swilling a$$holes not just driving the streets, but driving the sidewalks! That's progress!

It's better than teeny-boppers driving 2 miles down the road to see their friends. This isn't just to replace walking or driving. There's plenty of gray area in between. If I run out of soda, should I drive down to the corner store to get it? Should I walk that half mile for a soda? If it takes my car off the road and keeps it parked in the garage every once in a while, the that's progress.

I don't plan on gaining weight when I get my Segway.

Hmm, $4950? That's a whole lotta beans. I wonder how much Amazon will add for shipping?

    Vespa ET4: $3900

6.5 years of Unlimited Ride MetroCards: $4950

Not riding a Segway and looking like a complete clown: Priceless.

Ah, that's very true. Though if I still lived in that neck of the woods, I'd find it really, really hard to leave the car at home.

Mind you, I did cycle a lot, something that I haven't been doing since moving east.

Well, I live in a city that has supposedly the worst public transportation in the country, and yet I manage to get to work fron my neighborhood to downtown LA using one of the four bus lines that come within blocks of my house (amazing what working for a company that won't pay for parking, but will for a bus pass will do..). I don't believe that anyone here is going to use this thing for commuting. I can't see anyone using it to get groceries. Should you walk down to the corner store to get your soda? Yes. (that is, except Eugene. You're too thin already; eat something bubbeleh! ) Your friends live two miles away? Gee that's a whole 45 minutes at a stroll. God forbid!

The video on Amazon shows people using this thing to run around an office building for god's sake. So these things are going to be zipping down the middle of the sidewalk at 12 mph? What kind of insurance are you going to be required to carry, if any? Will there be helmets required? They aren't seen in the video.

I am seeing a brand new way for PI Lawyers to make money here: "Slammed by a Segway? Let Jacoby and Meyers get you the money you deserve!"

I didn't have much problem getting around... I mean, I only went to SF and stuff but the CalTrain is a bargain and I found the SF public buses to be alright, a little confusing, but they were really cheap, not crowded and seemed to cover the city pretty well.

$95 for shipping. The Amazon.com site has an enormous amount of information on the workings of the Segway. Sidewalk usage will be about 8 mph in cities, about the same as a brisk walk. Municipalities will determine how and where the Segway will be allowed. Go to the Segway site for information on how it is currently being used and tested by businesses and city governments. They're even being tested by the military for useage.

I've got this neat transportation device that is ecofriendly, allows me to exercise while I use it, lets me get to places cars can't get to and it's much faster than walking. It also cost me less than 200 bucks. So, no Segway for me.

Well here in the NW I can't imagine anyone using a Segway. It rains here about 200 days a year and I can't imagine people wanting to slide around on the sidewalks and flip over on a rainy day.

the problem with public transportation in the bay area is that the whole place is divided into different transportation systems: caltrain, muni, bart, etc (all operated seperately), and they don't connect up well. if going from one system to another, often everything is poorly scheduled so you will miss it by a few minutes, and then have to wait half an hour. and muni? muni is notorious for rude drivers, insane delays, lack of buses, etc. people out here in boston complain about the T all the time, but i love it. it gets me everywhere i want to go, from the beach (loose definition of beach ) to downtown, and is only a buck. sometimes even free. ah, the best was when they raised the fare -- "its a dollar now? oh no! &lt;bats eyelashes&gt; i only have 85 cents, and i have to be downtown in 5 minutes! &lt;bats eyelashes&gt;"

The SF buses are alright, but that's not the entire Bay Area. And speaking of CalTrain...It travels in a straight line and they stopped weekend service in July. <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

If BART actually encircled the bay, that would be nice...but by the time that happens, we'll all be traveling around in little Jetson's capsules. And cab service is non-existent outside of SF and the airports.

I need to move to New York...

I saw her out shopping with her little doggy the other day. She has really good skin. (Not the doggy. (Well, it may have, but I couldn't see because it was under a lot of fur.))

    Speaking of clowns,

How hard would it be for Mr. Kamen to make a Segway unicycle? Similar to the current version, but rather than a foot board between the two wheels, have two boards stradling one wheel? Curved profile of course, like a scooter tire or something. An extra gyroscope or three? Tilt front and back and side to side without falling over. Just to complete the dork on wheels look, you know?

I just looked at that at amazon.com. My word! Why not just get a bike? It'll cost a lot less and do almost the same job. I don't even want to think about how much exercise you'd lose with one of those things.
