How about explaining why you believe that buying AIM would end up being a worthwhile purchase for Twitter?
Wouldn’t they have useful chat-based patents? Or is AIM so old they’re all expired? Twitter’s commonality with AIM’s format is probably why it was suggested.
1) I don't know if any patents have expired but with so many chat options available, even open-source formats, I don't think there's anything AOL could leverage if they haven't been suing countless others for royalties over the last 2 decades.
2) Could you explain what you mean by "Twitter’s commonality with AIM’s format."

Twitter’s… a chat system. Ostensibly. 280 characters of minutiae in a stream, replies to them, copies, etc. Actually, if I remember right their system is shit for discussions because you have to @ anyone you want to talk to, which countsa against the character limit. AIM would fix that problem and also isn’t character limited.

1) Their primary system is open, which is very different from AIM's person-to-person private chat system.
2) Twitter has had a private chat system in place since the beginning. It keeps a conversation history and you don't have to state the user account with each reply.
3) Tweets being character limited is intentional and not hurdle to overcome by suggesting buy AIM so can figure out how to offer more characters per comment.
