If I recall correctly it was clearly stated on the Apple web site which models of iPhone worked with which carriers. I also think you could only get a GSM+CDMA iPhone (whose CDMA only works with Verizon) from Verizon, or from Apple with a Verizon plan attached. If it is unlocked, you can also use that with any GSM carrier.

I don’t know if Verizon is different, but my experience with CDMA carriers is they outright refuse to connect  a device that doesn’t come “blessed” by them. They don’t use a SIM - you have to talk to them and give them some numbers off your device, etc. Big pain in the ass which is why the rest of the world uses GSM and SIM modules.

I was so glad when the Olympics came to Vancouver, as our last CDMA provider (Telus) realized they would make $0 by being technically unable to serve foreign travelers. So they started GSM service in Vancouver, and afterwards rolled it out to the rest of their nationwide network, then after deeming that a success (as if anyone who could pass science class in high school had any doubt) they phased out CDMA. Good riddance! And finally some competition to Robbers.

Honestly it’s not competition. It’s blatantly obvious price fixing that some sleazy lawyer (or paid off judge) manages to sneak under the door of the competition bureau. Carriers engineer plans to not be comparable, and invent tacky gimmicks thinking the fleeced masses are consoled by then. “5 hours of free data, once a month, you download their app to activate it.  Seriously WTF???

If a Canadian carrier offers you a plan that is reasonable - you either just missed it, or, couldn’t buy their SIM card before the promotion ends because of the lineups and rioting involved in getting one, or, more likely, just actually missed a better deal from their competitor because, hey, all Canadians should spend their lifetimes monitoring iPhoneInCanada forums so they don’t get shafted by carriers.

If the Americans ever feel bad for having no healthcare or gun control, you can cheer yourself up by cruising our telco web sites. There you will see America clearly has choice when it comes to cell phone providers.

And if if you didn’t take English in high school and learn how to read the table at the bottom of the iPhone page that explains, clearly, what unlocked means and which iPhone works with CDMA, then there’s a judge who will rule in your favor anyway.
