Re: more storage for the public — I would expect some announcement on this at WWDC or in the fall, but don’t count on 200GB. You’re not students doing tons of creative work in video et al. I’d expect more like the base free storage for consumers would move to 50GB, which is more than enough for mail, documents, and backups — exactly what the vast majority of iOS users use iCloud for. The 200GB tier for a “whopping“ $3/month is currently one of the best deals going in cloud storage.

server space isn't free. although I'll agree that 5GB is way too small. 50GB would make a better free tier
you have to have a managed ID, which means it was set up by the school you are associated with
