Siri don’t suck because of privacy.

The reason I heard was it’s because it works based on Natural Language processing. The competition uses basic speech recognition and a lookup function.
hopefully this new hire can appreciate the harder work that went into making Siri and can find a way to set her free!

but I do wonder why Siri can’t also have similar lookup functions (and better speech recognition!).  Don’t know enough about the subject to understand why it can or cannot.

I wasn't aware of this distinction. This explains why sometimes I'll ask Siri for directions to [some restaurant] and she'll completely mess it up or send me to some similar-sounding place 500 miles away; however, I open Maps, tap the mic on the KB and dictate the name and it's perfectly accurate. I always found it frustrating as hell that the allegedly smarter one tries to get too clever and ultimately misinterprets what I was saying.
A voice-based system which would ASK questions of the person making the request would be the best way forward, instead of Siri throwing up a bunch of web links on a screen. My only uses for Siri are severely limited these days. I consider it a lost cause at this point.

I would hazard a guess that a hire of this calibre and at this level would have taken anywhere from 6-12 months - just the process of shortlisting potential candidates would have probably taken months.

So, it means that Apple has been on the ball all the time about its AI initiatives. Yet, naysayers on this forum have been berating Apple about its supposed lack of foresight and planning in improving its AI/voice assistant capabilities.

I would call this a "Hail Mary Pass" Hire.   Hopefully they catch it in the end zone.

    Meanwhile, over at Google...

I suspect there will be walkouts or masses of employees quitting if this continues.

Or they will think about their stock options and celebrate because of the Profits they will get by being a defense contractor.

Some of them, maybe. But it’s a job seekers market these days and people who decide to jump ship would be immediately hired by other companies in the valley.
