I wonder how many people that complained about the "useless Animoji" feature are going to be using this feature?! This just goes to show you that the 3D tech will go far beyond what we can currently imagine. But first it needs to exist. I applaud Apple for having that forward thinking.
I find this crap to be exactly as idiotic and useless as the facially-animated emoji. Where exactly is the practical need for this? There's so much more useful stuff to do with depth sensor tech. This is the junk food of tech gadgetry.
For Apple, I'd say the practical need is to have something more showy for the tech than it's primary utility of being able to unlock the iPhone fast. While gimmicky, these things do appeal to a great many users, young and old, even if they are just a flash in the pan novelty features.

Pokemon has been out for 2 decades now I still couldn't tell you what it is and yet I ca tell you it's been hugely popular, including the iPhone game. Is the game practical? Not for me, but I did read about how it's allowed kids with autism to be more interactive with their environments which and even social which as made parents happy so there's a practicality in that, as long as what the makers of the game are doing to generate revenue and profits.

So what if Apple created a whole bunch of plastic, transparent IMacs that served no practical use in how you use the device. It created a massive amount of interest and it may have been the first domino that dropped that showed Apple was on their way back to the top.

This application of the technology won't appeal to everyone but it has implications beyond this. Being able to try on virtual frames for glasses will make buying glasses easier as well as having them fit correctly as the 3D scanner can store an exact measurement of the size of your face. Same with hat sizes or shoe sizes. At some point you could send a 3D avatar to a tailor and they can make made-to-measure clothes for you online.

There have been apps that let women try on makeup from different brands. You can't feasibly try on 100 different brands of makeup in a store but you can easily do this with AR. You can't have a hairdresser give you a hundred different hairstyles before you find one that looks good, the hair has to grow back out again but with AR, it's easy to see what definitely won't look good. Apple isn't going to be the company to do this because they don't sell these commodities, it will take time for the companies who do sell them to find a way of feasibly connecting their customers with their product or service.

Some Modiface demos are here, some of these use their own tracking techniques:

    L'Oreal bought them recently:

It just takes time for advanced technology to get into the hands of enough customers and for companies to find ways to effectively leverage it. Some experiments will work and some won't but AR is an important piece of technology that will find its place.

Is giving up ownership of your identity worth it?
As I mentioned earlier, I haven't used Snapchat so I'm somewhat out of the loop.  How does this feature result in someone giving up ownership of their identity?
Aside from not using the app, there is nothing to prevent your visage from being snarfed (in 3D now) and used for whatever purposes Snapchat wishes.  This is similar to Google Photos being "free" in exchange for the right of Alphabet/Google to use your photos worldwide, royalty-free, for any purpose, forever, irrevocably. If you think computers are dumb now, just wait. Storage is cheeeap.
