Privacy Concern

Hi,

Since we all know what is going on with Facebook and the whole "Data Security" Thingy, I am very much concerned about my online Data and credentials security. When I started looking about data security over the internet, I was flooded with Virtual Private Networks and numerous brands offering premium services to provide security to my online activity. Can I trust the providers? Will my data exchange and internet privacy be really safe over the web? I don't know what to do. someone just please guide me with a proper and a detailed solution.
