Why the fuck would people trample each other, fall down, and injure themselves during a fucking drill?
Because they weren't told it was a drill. Further, people who did know it was a drill purposely misled/deceived the unknowing customers into thinking it was a real situation. That is why Apple is liable; because they knowingly created a chaotic situation in which customers were injured. This really isn't very complicated, folks.

What is wrong with these people?
Do they think money grows on trees?
Maybe, but the reality is these sorts of drills in a public place are beyond stupid. Frankly it conditions people to respond with fear instead of intelligence.

They do it during Black Friday, so why not for something that actually matters to sane people?

I totally agree. The Apple Store manager should be fired for stupidity.

It’s hard to simulate chaos orderly.
    (fixed that for you.)
Haha exactly. One person runs and then the whole crowd turns like a herd of gazelles. They can’t help it. Hard to repress millions of years of predator avoidance.

Well at least there were a few reasonable responses here, and not only the typical "mock the victim", "mock the plaintiff", crap. Those of you who think it's not a big deal, well, I'm not saying I wish a PTSD-causing trauma on you, but I really do think you need to learn some empathy with those who have.

Except that orderly is an adjective. It would have to be orderlyly. Or not 🤔

I work in a PK-12 school district and we do fire drills and lockdown drills. Some are announced, while others are not. There are even lockdown drills where the Sheriff and State Police show up just as if it were something real. You have to do them to prepare in case something happens. You never know and you have to know what to do. This saves lives in the end...so if someone got a scrapped knee thats a hell of a lot better than being shot to death or watching someone else being shot to death or whatever.

Entirely true.  But whoever conducted the drill, be it Apple or the mall, they are responsible for making sure it happens safely.  It looks here like that wasn't done.

Is there any indication of whether the drill was explained to the patrons before executing it, or was it just "Surprise, m-f-er!"  If these people were volunteers, and were told what was going on, and to expect the things that were to happen, that's not so bad.  Still looks like they botched it in this case.  On the other hand, if these were unsuspecting people they just surprised in the store, without giving them a chance to decline participation, somebody effed up, bigtime.

I question the utility of a drill during working hours with the public anyway.  It's not like those same people are hanging around the mall every day and will benefit from such a drill.  This kind of drill is for training the employees of the mall, not the patrons.  If they must do it during public hours, what they should have done was close off the area of the drill near opening or closing, ask for volunteers from the public, and brief them on what they wanted them to do, warning them of whatever simulated events were going to take place so that they can act appropriately, and maybe give a few of them instructions on certain behaviours they wanted to have happen, e.g. panic, anger, injury, etc.

And frankly, the balloon popping is inexcusable.  PTSD is a thing, and you never know who in the crowd might be affected by it.  Whoever thought that one up is a bloody idiot.

If that's who came up with the idea for this cluster-f, I agree.

Excellent point.  There are only 2 reasons to do a drill like this: 1. to train/test your employees to make sure they are ready for a real emergency, or 2. as an experiment to see how people react in an emergency.  The former doesn't need uninformed members of the general public; the latter is a risky academic exercise that should only be conducted by trained scientists with proper human subjects protections (and IRB approval).  Someone (I expect a manager of the mall) wasn't qualified to make this decision and screwed up.

Never understood the point of a drill AFTER people are told, it is a drill. It is an nominal exercise for a check-mark, and it is absolutely useless.
When Boeing tests evacuation of an airplane (90 second rule), there are ER teams on site to assist all the injured, because people albeit knowing it is a drill, try their best to create a situation similar to the real evacuation... Only that way you can test it properly...otherwise, it would be just a waste of time, since results would be nowhere near of what would have happened in a real emergency.

It's sad that schools and malls have to go through this just in case of mass shooting. Restaurants probably will be added to the drill list next.
