Apple this week flipped the switch on live sports and news sections in its TV app for Canadian iPhone, iPad and Apple TV owners, granting users access to coverage of the FIFA World Cup and other popular programming.

Apple TV App

The new capabilities, spotted by MacRumors on Thursday, integrates live content from a variety of sports and news providers who market streaming apps on the App Store.

According to an Apple support document, which was updated today to reflect the new additions, customers in Canada can now access sports programming from CBC, DAZN, RDS GO, Sportsnet and TSN GO directly from the TV app.

Like Apple's U.S. rollout of the same feature, live sports coverage is collected in a new "Sports" section within the TV app to provide easy access to live and upcoming games. Content is further broken down into categories that include sport, leagues, teams, events and more.

As for news, Apple's TV app integrates live coverage from Bloomberg, CBC TV, Cheddar, CNN and CTV News.

Since the TV app is essentially a repository for streaming content served up by third-party apps, users will need to download a channel or network's iOS or tvOS software to view live content. In some cases, channels charge an extra fee or subscription for over-the-top streaming, though many simply require cable provider authentication.

Apple introduced the TV app to Canadian users last September alongside the release of iOS 11, nearly a year after the app debuted in the U.S.. TV acts as a central hub for browsing, discovering and managing streaming content across a variety of providers and owned media.

Poor Canadian. We don't have an Apple store, over here.

Be kinda nice if the CBC Sports app would support AirPlay.

If "central hub" means "some content but not all" and "ignores locally stored content" and "different capabilities for different services" and "often loses track of which episodes have been watched and which haven't" then I agree!

(Note that I'm not taking aim at the article here -- it describes how the TV app is SUPPOSED to work. Maybe someday it actually will!)

Finally, all the curling coverage Canadians (politely) demand.

I have never found a need or use for the TV app on my TV 4K till yesterday when I discovered I was able to set it up to watch all the World Cup Football games within the app.  Love it, no need to change HDMI inputs and suffer the horrendous cable TV interface to access Fox and Fox Sports for the all games, it 'just works' in the TV app..

Can you pause while you answer a call or rewind when you miss something?
