Apple quarterly profit?

in General Discussion edited January 2014
Was wondering if Apple's Q4 numbers have been announced. If they haven't, whos willing to bet on a profit for the end of 2002.

Also, from the Merril statement that Apple is "posting operating losses offset by interest revenue" - what does this mean exactly?

It means that Apple is losing money selling computers, but makes up for it from the interest they get on their money in the bank and that's why they post profits. "Apple is a good investment banker who also happens to sell computers" is what someone once said. Personally, as a shareholder, as long as Apple doesn't lose money, I don't care where it comes from. At least until they get some compelling desktops out. And their money in the bank will allow them to ride out the storm until then.

I don't think this is what you're looking for, it sounds like you're trying to figure out how well they did the holiday season and the end of this year.

    Anyways...

    <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2002/oct/16earnings.html"; target="_blank">http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2002/oct/16earnings.html</a>;

That's their press release on Q4 2002 Earnings period for Apple that ended Sept. 28, 2002.

Their Q1 2003 Financial results will most likely be out sometime within the next week, it looks like their past Q1 statements have been released in mid-January.

Last I heard, Apple has $4 Billion in cash reserves, which means a hefty interst revenue.

Thanks for the link, I guess we'll find out how the holiday season went shortly. Anyone caution a guess? I still think Apple is the best positioned computer maker in this economic climate. I mean, who else is really, truly investing and actually RELEASING products this innovative? When (if?) the economy picks up, I think Apple will be just where they want to be.

On an unrelated note, I haven't heard much discussion on Jobs's announcement that 50% of sales have been to Windows users. Anyone have any more direct/solid information on this?

For anyone interested in Apple's Q1 conference call, they're reporting financials on Wednesday, the link to the conference call is here:

Thanks for the link. I predict Apple will earn a small profit of perhaps $21.3 million. If they actually *do* announce a $21.3 million profit on Wednesday, I think all the AI mods to chip in and buy me a 12" powerbook. Thats REASONABLE.......

Anyone else want to get into the predictions game??

iPods? Notebooks? XServes? Displays? Software? Yes, their desktop lineup needs A LOT of work, but they're ok otherwise.

    Applenut,

No warnings were given about the upcoming Qtr.based on Apple's previous guidance so don't expect a loss. Thomson Financial estimates +.03 per share vs. +.02 the previous quarter. A year ago it was +.12. SJ indicated to CNBC and during the keynote that the xmas qtr. was good. Apple projects very conservatively and they will meet or beat the street estimates. Listen in on Wednesday.

    iPods yes

Notebooks... updated late.... may not have sold enough to offset horrible desktop sales.... and the iBook's margins im sure were reduced with the last update. xserve? they sell a couple thousand a quarter... hardly impacting their financial numbers..... displays? the overpriced ones that only work on new computers, primarily desktops which are not selling.

    hardly ok otherwise

iPods sold well, eMacs were probably alright, Notebooks were solid...Xserves and PowerMacs were probably pretty bad.

Software sales were most likely ok.

I see Apple making a slim profit.

Apple will show a profitable quarter, right in line with their previous estimates. If they were to fail to meet these targets they are required to announce it in advance (as they did several quarters ago). They have not done so.

How can we convince you Applenut?

nah... i know they will, im just curious "what" they are going to do to post that profit because i dont see it coming from operations and im not sure their interest is enough...... do they have any ARM shares left?
  • Reply 15 of 24
Sales figures and ARM figures will be disclosed. I suspect iPod's did very well, particularly with the Windoze version released. 17" iMacs did extremely well as did iBooks and the TiBook. Apple also makes a good profit on software sales. All of this will be spelled out in detail on Wednesday. Apple and Dell are the only box makers showing profits.

Apples margins are much higher than PC makers, most everything they sell is at full price.

So even if their sales are down they still can eek out a profit.

It didn't help Apple two quarters ago when they had a loss.

Margins are higher for Apple 'cause they pay more for their computers. Hardly anything is "off the shelf" for them. This misconception that Apple "sells at full price" whatver that means is bogus. If you compare feature for feature (including bundled software packages), you'll see that Dell, HP-Compaq and even Gateway, don't undersell Apple by much, if at all. Yes, you can buy a very cheap computer from those vendors, but you don't get the same quality or ultimate value.
