Was wondering if Apple's Q4 numbers have been announced. If they haven't, whos willing to bet on a profit for the end of 2002.
Also, from the Merril statement that Apple is "posting operating losses offset by interest revenue" - what does this mean exactly?

It means that Apple is losing money selling computers, but makes up for it from the interest they get on their money in the bank and that's why they post profits. "Apple is a good investment banker who also happens to sell computers" is what someone once said. Personally, as a shareholder, as long as Apple doesn't lose money, I don't care where it comes from. At least until they get some compelling desktops out. And their money in the bank will allow them to ride out the storm until then.
Anyways...

That's their press release on Q4 2002 Earnings period for Apple that ended Sept. 28, 2002.
Their Q1 2003 Financial results will most likely be out sometime within the next week, it looks like their past Q1 statements have been released in mid-January.

Last I heard, Apple has $4 Billion in cash reserves, which means a hefty interst revenue.
On an unrelated note, I haven't heard much discussion on Jobs's announcement that 50% of sales have been to Windows users. Anyone have any more direct/solid information on this?

No warnings were given about the upcoming Qtr.based on Apple's previous guidance so don't expect a loss. Thomson Financial estimates +.03 per share vs. +.02 the previous quarter. A year ago it was +.12. SJ indicated to CNBC and during the keynote that the xmas qtr. was good. Apple projects very conservatively and they will meet or beat the street estimates. Listen in on Wednesday.

iPods? Notebooks? XServes? Displays? Software? Yes, their desktop lineup needs A LOT of work, but they're ok otherwise.

iPods yes
Notebooks... updated late.... may not have sold enough to offset horrible desktop sales.... and the iBook's margins im sure were reduced with the last update. xserve? they sell a couple thousand a quarter... hardly impacting their financial numbers..... displays? the overpriced ones that only work on new computers, primarily desktops which are not selling.
hardly ok otherwise
Software sales were most likely ok.
I see Apple making a slim profit.
How can we convince you Applenut?

Apple will show a profitable quarter, right in line with their previous estimates. If they were to fail to meet these targets they are required to announce it in advance (as they did several quarters ago). They have not done so.

nah... i know they will, im just curious "what" they are going to do to post that profit because i dont see it coming from operations and im not sure their interest is enough...... do they have any ARM shares left?
So even if their sales are down they still can eek out a profit.
It didn't help Apple two quarters ago when they had a loss.
Margins are higher for Apple 'cause they pay more for their computers. Hardly anything is "off the shelf" for them. This misconception that Apple "sells at full price" whatver that means is bogus. If you compare feature for feature (including bundled software packages), you'll see that Dell, HP-Compaq and even Gateway, don't undersell Apple by much, if at all. Yes, you can buy a very cheap computer from those vendors, but you don't get the same quality or ultimate value.
